Does the Switch have a 4K output option? It's basically a Shield TV in portable form and even that device has 4K output for movies. Eventually Netflix will come to the Switch and it would be a shame if Nintendo decided to block 4K output for movies on that device.

If the hardware is capable of it (and it seems to be) then it's possible it could be enabled for movies in the future, but it seems the current SDK only allows up to 1080p.

Wasnt there a list of the specs based on an old dev kit stating that 4k output is a thing?

It is not "basically a Shield TV in portable form". That's not how it works. Your posts are odd.

Dude, it's been proven to be exactly a portable Shield TV with an extra gig of RAM. The Switch isn't special outside of the joy cons.

Dude, sharing similar hardware doesn't make it the same damn thing. By that logic a $1600 MacBook pro is the same as an $800 Windows PC.

Saying that the Switch should be able to output 4K because a dedicated Media device can... That's just wrong.

What kind of analogy is this? A set that is capable of something means it is capable. They both have the same GPU, it is literally the exact same GPU.

A rose by any other name is still a rose. If it's using the same hardware, it's the same thing. No amount of marketing can change that.

One thing is the hardware that can run it, and another is the software that supports it

About the MacBook pro, that's kinda true. Technically you can even put osx on it, other then aesthetics, what's different...?

That's what I'm wondering. I guess maybe in a few months Nintendo might unlock 4K for streaming apps and try to tout the respective firmware upgrade as some major improvement to the Switch. On the gaming side of things, Nintendo would be smart to have Nvidia bring their game streaming service to Switch and just charge people an extra 10 dollars for a 4K streaming copy of the game along with their digital download or cartridge copy. As long as the save files are syncable between the local and cloud copies, this could help keep Switch competitive.

There is of course the question of whether the MyDP to HDMI adapter inside the dock can output that resolution though. It would need to be a sufficiently new HDMI standard that supports the high bandwidth needed to transmit 4K. They wouldn't enable the use of 4K if it meant everyone who wanted to use it had to get a new dock.

Shame I can't officially stream my PC games to the Switch. Y'know, seeing as its the same hardware and all.

    Wondering if we'll get Moonlight.

So can someone tell me why the games on the system are up to 720P until you put it in dock is 900P and upscaled to 1080P? Cause this i never understand. I get the 720P is probably cause the screen size on the system but how it can get up to 900P (Something that isn't common in USA.... or least to me) if it can go that high, why not higher to 1080P?

The game resolution is different than the output system resolution right? So games are only 720P-900P or something, but the dock upscale to 1080P? I'm so confused.
