I define this "Generation" by the software used to make it, Unreal Engine 4, Cryengine 3. They support 4k, but that's not really a selling point.

That's still not very "precise" since Unreal Engine 3 lasted ~10 years before Unreal Engine 4 was available for devs. In another 10 years I suspect we'll move on from 4k and perhaps get to 8k, with the way tech evolves exponentially.

Anyways, I would expect 4k to become the "norm" in the next couple years, and I'm sure within the next year there will be "affordable" monitors out there (read: Something that isn't $600). Technically, current PC hardware could probably do it, though you'd need to crossfire/SLI some GPUs, something like 2 GTX 780TI's or something would probably do it for max detail and playable framerates.

Considering that 4K monitors/TVs are still too expensive to be worth it, and computer hardware isn't really strong enough yet to support it with "max" settings, I think it's too early.
Also, define "this generation".
Asus do a 4k @ 28 inches, 60Hz, 1ms response (admittedly g2g, not sure what actual is*) at around £350. Granted it is TN and needs displayport for the 60Hz.

*probably should have just read the eurogamer/digitalfoundry review. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-asus-pb287q-review reckons 21ms

Not the easiest sell but a contender for someone with a bit of cash to lay down on a monitor, though I admit it probably would come down to a coin flip between it and one of those nice Dell 1440 vertical res ultrasharp ips things unless I/my would be client could truly use the real estate (a distinct possibility actually though none of that is games).

As for games... that is a tough one. I would look to the consoles to hold things back but this is not like the old consoles keeping us on DX9 ways of thinking for years (not that I especially objected to that). I reckon by about Easter 2016 it will be something of a faux pas to not at least have your UI be 4K friendly (it is already happening http://www.wsgf.org/category/4k-grades/a ).

Windows 10 will have the biggest influence is 4K becoming mainstream, because 7 doesn't handle if well and 8.1 still has a low user base.

Also, it's not just £350 on a monitor. It's also £400+ on graphics hardware able to output 4K. That's a lotta money on a feature that is a gimmick at this point due to lack of support for it (generally speaking - I know graphics drivers and gaming engines and Win 8.1 do support it, but do the devs build their games with 4K in mind yet?).

It'll come, although I don't think it'll go mainstream this year. Maybe next year. And yes, I do know that there's a mac that does 5K.

I hope i will start playing 4k from this summer. I am planning to buy a new monitor and i already have in a mind one game that will shine in 4k.

Ryse Son of Rome.

The thing is i don't see the 4k resolution hitting the mainstream anytime soon. As some other members noticed, PS4 can't even play all games in 1080p but maybe this is because of the laziness of some developers.

The current consoles should have ALL had 4K support, but they can't even do 1080p on 100% of all games, just like the last set of shitty consoles... Pisses me off. :/

Wouldn't that have then meant having to hook up your consoles via displayport or something equally uncommon/not so consumer friendly? HDMI2.0 is still filtering down into consumer gear, it is not even on many 4k tvs/screens, and 1.4 only does 4k at 30Hz

Don't get me wrong if I had my way there would probably be some heads on poles over the lack of resolution increases, let alone whatever happened in laptop world to see things go backwards after the P4 era, but this would be appear to be one of those "tech wasn't there" cases.

Yeah I hate that phones have 5 inch screens at 1920x1080, yet 15.6 inch laptops come with just 1366x768... it's such bullshit. :/

fuck 4k gaming. i watch 4k porn. ^_^

The move to 1080p did not do wonders for various porn actors, I would have imagined the move to 4k would have magnified that even further. Though I guess it could make orgies more enjoyable if you needed the detail on wide angle shots.

I don't like you trying to "nocebo effect" this.

I have a retina macbook 13" (resolution 2560*1600) with loads of Steam games on but legit none of them even have options for my resolution. Or anything beyond 1080p for that matter. I always go with 1280*800 since it's the same aspect ratio as my screen.

Otherwise I game on Wii U and Xbox 360 which definitely don't have any 4K options.

There are multimonitor setups, games are done for 1080p in mind (some even lower), there is always new and improved AA technologies to eliminate jaggies, etc.
I would say that high refresh rates and gsync/freesync will be the next things before 4K. After all that's what effects more on actual gameplay instead of resolution.
