Any specific reason why we should go directly to 4k? Surely 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 could serve as a good next step?

Because frankly, anyone who's interested in UHD is going to want the very best since they can afford it. And the very best is 4K.

Probably because both of those are already a thing. There are plenty of 2560x1440 monitors about, and they're in the "affordable" zone as well, and 2560x1600 is 16:10 aspect ratio, which isn't optimal for gaming (purely because games nowadays are built for 16:9, and FOV is often much better with 16:9 resolutions/monitors). 4k is just the next logical step gaming wise, but has yet to make it into the affordable price zone to become as common as 1080p/2560x1440.

because 4k is 4 times the resolution of FHD, length and width wise.

This allows one to scale the image from/to 4k/FHD without any major loss of quality.

4 pixels on a 4k screen are equal to one pixel on a FHD screen.
