About everything that have been said, i would like to notice that the 3DSXL screen has not the antireflect anymore. this 3DS screens feature despite of giving a very good gaming confort was also responsible of the tire effect after using the 3D function.
so it has been removed on the 3DSXL and the 3D play is now just awesome, even if the general screen color goes a little yellow. my point, is a good initiative, light from a neighboor window can be easily manage.

I understand what you mean.
This is the exact reason which keeps me from buying a 3DS console of any kind.

With the high resolution screens these days, be it on a product by Apple or Samsung or any other company, the 3DS just doesn't cut it anymore.

Although the library of games it has makes it rather tempting to buy.

Been mulling over this the last month or so.

buying a console is not just about the hardware but the general game experience...so even without an amoled screen the 3DSXL deserved it price

Nintendo DS and DS Lite - 3 inch display @ 256x192 = 106.67 PPI
Nintendo DSi - 3.25 inch display @ 256x192 = 98.46 PPI
Nintendo DSi XL - 4.2 inch display @ 256x192 = 76.19 PPI
Nintendo 3DS - 3.53 inch display @ 800x240 = 236.61 or 2x400x240 132.15 PPI in 3D Mode, since that's what each eye realistically perceives
Nintendo 3DS XL - 4.88 inch display @ 800x240 = 171.15 or 95.59 PPI in 3D Mode

As you can see above, the 3DS series have a higher PPI than the DS, DS Lite, DSi or the DSi XL - the "uglier" DS games are the result of upscaling which can be disabled. For all intents and purposes, 1:1 Mode should look far better than on the original systems. That said, I hope Nintendo introduces overlays via an update - the black frame is pretty distracting for some users. Science, how does it work? :yay:

It's a matter of personal priorities.

When I buy a gadget, because that's what it is, I like to feel assured I'm not being ripped off.
Knowing that there are better devices out there for less money makes me feel like I could have a better experience with the device.

The hardware is a vital part of the game experience, in this case.

Doesn't matter how good the games are, the device is still rather outdated for the price and the experience could be better.

Because the experience could be better, this makes me question the purchase.

That's kinda like saying you don't care how good a movie is, it's just not good enough if you're playing it on a DVD player instead of a Blu-ray player.

even though i love the big screen of 3ds XL, i have to accept it is blurrier than my psp go. i prefer this kind of blurriness to the smaller screen so i don't regret buying 3ds xl instead of 3ds, but i can understand the op.

No, well sort of, it's like paying the same price or more for a dvd player than for a blu-ray player.
Not taking the backwards compatibility of blu-ray into account in this analogy.

Knowing the technology is available and for a better price, you might ask yourself if it's worth making the investment for these particular games.

Wouldn't you rather watch a movie in HD than SD, if given the same price?
Sure, you might be missing out on a few movies but there are many other movies to be watched on blu-ray as well.

That's why it's a matter of personal priorities.

It isn't even fair to compare 3DS screen to Vita's screen.
PSP had a higher resolution than 3DS (480x272 vs 400x240)

Nintendo gave a huge priority for 3D, but that costs a lot,
3DS could have a better resolution without 3D,
and there is a lot of raw power consumed for 3D, since images must be rendered twice.

That said, I say the worst thing about 3DS, is that it have 3D.

1. turn the 3D slider all the way Off

2. turn the brightness to highest level

3. move the 3DS away from your face (half an arms length away)

4. if original DS game, HOLD SELECT while booting, for 1:1 resolution.

ALT. play in a dark room, with the lights off.

AHHHHH.......PARADISE!

I had the luck to be able to compare a standard 3DS and the 3DSXl at the same time, running the same game (Fire Emblem Awakening). Being at the same brightness settings, the XL screen was noticeably washed out in its colors, and had an effect somewhat similar to JPEG artifacting. 2D sprites and icons didn't blend together as smoothly as they had on the standard 3DS screen, which probably explains the jarring JPEG comparison.

More than that, the colors were also more sedated on the XL screen, like a TV whose saturation was dialed down a notch.

I really appreciated the larger screen, but in exchange for a blurried picture that looked worse, I went with the standard. It's not fanboyism when it's the hardware at fault. It's fanboyism when one excuses the faults because they prefer the XL version for a different reason.

Finally some mature people to converse with!;)
Unfortunately I did not compare 3DS and 3DS XL before buying one and now it is just more hassle than it is worth to sell 3DS XL and get a regular 3DS. Also the battery life is very important for me.
Overall I really enjoy the games but with this price I did not expect the screen to look like this. I wonder if it is solely because of the 3DS screen or it is because Nintendo wants to make as much as money possible off of their fan base.

On the flipside, I've heard the XL's 3D effect is much more noticeable on the larger screen than the smaller, something about having a wider POV to work with.

i dont know about other people, but owning a portable game console is a whole way of life, my point, a portable game device does not have the purpose to provide a homegameconsole experience, (as nintendo teach me since childhood through my 1rst gameboy). A portable game console have it own way of gaming experience philosophy : ways that i felt since pokemon rouge et bleue, metal gear ghost babel, golden sun, animal crossing ww, Yu go oh ..and so on...

and i have never and will never wonder why Tendo do not release a proper pokemon rpg game on livingroom console, or produce a 2second stick for the 3DS or an ARMAGEDON AMOLED FULL hyper HD screen for their portable game device. its so obvious...

I am still disgusted by the HD ps3 version of MGS portable ops( where is the spirit),

finally, speaking of the price, i will just like to remind that : there are things , immaterial things in a product, that worth the consumers money : the expertise , the engeneering..., SOMETIMES people just calculate the price of a devices component and said a product is expensive or doesnt worth it price

Iam an 29 yearsold gamer of evrery existing plateform(even pc) and the 3DSXL makes me happy, and i will always wonder about people counting evrery single frame

thank and excuze my grammar

I never really liked the idea of XL series. Unless there is a reason to be playing with a bigger screen (uh like games being displayed at a higher resolution), I see no reason to upscale a 240 image.
