If you want to play games then now, if you don't, then don't, doesn't matter, GW mode has firmware spoofing, so you can play all of your games just fine(I doubt that there are games that require firmware 9.6 though).

Would you say the "Gateway official user manual" at http://maxconsole.com/maxconsole_files/v3.1.pdf is the best guide to use for N3ds hacking?

Why not? Its not like theres a game that needs anything above 9.0 anyway Besides, who needs eshop when you can download all your updates from the web in .cia format. 9.6 is as good as 9.0 when it comes to GW if you ask me

FWIW I have a good quality screwdriver set here, and I find that the #1 Phillips head is a much better fit for the bottom cover screws on the New 3DS (the regular, I dunno about XL).

I've had no reason to update and I'm still on 9.2 emunand. I guess those who need eshop and do go online to play alot need to update. For those that updated there emunand its not the end of the world, as a member stated, all that needs to be done is rebuild your emunand and start fresh. Tedious job if you installed a shit ton of cia's but hey better than waiting.

Well I got all my updates from that one particular place and they all work without a hitch! IMHO its the best place for .cia files especially if you find a MEGA uploader.

It gets better later. The first times I needed to open mine it almost lost a finger
Now It pops open quickly. I leave the case unscrewed, btw, and it never opened without me "wanting"
