I'm just curious, I don't know much about hacking... but the dumped 3DS roms, is it possible to remove the 3D feature from the roms, or disable? I mean, you can turn it on and off on the actual 3DS, so maybe you can remove the 3D files. Maybe this is impossible, but just wondering, then it'd be a smaller file and maybe playable?

That has nothing to do with why it's not playable, so that wouldn't fix anything.

Also stuff like this goes into the "hacking theories" discussion.

Well, if you remove the 3 from 3DS ROMs you can play them on a normal DS without problems.

Oh sorry. But, if regular DS games can be played but not 3DS, I assume it's 3D part that's makes it not playable. But what do I know. I was just thinking, maybe you can just turn the 3DS rom into a regular DS rom, since it's possible to play 3DS games in 2D.

But if that's not the problem. Oh well.

No, a 3DS game is not just a DS game with 3D.

I still think Nintendo should have changed the damn name...

That, basically the entire thing is heavily encrypted, and so far, there haven't been found any keys / exploits that allows the games, that are made for the 3ds, to be played in anything else, other then a legaly bought game cart + a 3ds that works in the same region that the game is made for.

Difference is that the 3DS is completely new handheld with different, superior hardware. 3DS has more RAM than the DS, it has a completely different GPU (well, it has a GPU, most of all), a different processor running at different speeds, et cetera. It's just backwards compatible to the DS, in the sense that it plays old DS titles.

You can't just take code written for one hardware architecture, leave out some bits and run it on inferior hardware. There's too much of a difference.

I think I may need to show the difference in very simple terms going by your posts.

DS: Lets just say, powerwise it's capabilities lie around Playstation 1 & N64.
3DS: Capabilities go around PS2 & Gamecube but seems to be able to do stuff better than the Wii.

    For an actual gaming example.
DS: Can do top down Grand Theft Auto games quite well...hell it did so with Chinatown Wars. A 3D title would look like a mess example Cop: The Recruit.
3DS: Can do a Xbox/PS2 3D Grand Theft Auto game.

If a DS could simply play 3DS games by just taking the 3D out of them then companies like Activision would have ported that version to DS rather than making a game just for the DS...of course some lazy devs do still "upgrade" ports of DS games to 3DS.

No! I think they're cute... and entertaining! For all we know, he might be 10 year old, or something. His noobish thoughts are entirely forgivable.

Powerwise I can I understand, but wouldn't the 3D graphics be the reason for it's power requirements. I never mention 3Ds roms can be played on a DS. I was just saying if it was possible to remove the 3D feature of a rom, it woudn't be 3D anymore. It'd be a regular DS game. I'm no hacker, so I can't confirm anything. The reason it's 8GB or 4GB is because it's 3D; remove that, and it's just a regular DS game of 128ish MB.

For PS1 vs PS2, it's graphics. Just as for PS2 vs PS3. The same for Gamecube and Wii is graphics and the ability to interact with the game. I'm sure 3DS has better graphics as well, so maybe it's impossible to compress the size of a 3DS rom. But since on a 3DS you can remove the 3D feature, I was thinking maybe it's possible to configure it to not be 3D.

Might as well ask what the difference between DVD and VHS is. The storage medium is different, the data contained is different, it's meant to run on different hardware, etc.

There's 2D N64 games, but you can't play them on an SNES.

That's not how it works. The 3D is done by simply doubling the camera in-game to two cameras, positioning them slightly apart, then aiming them at the same focal point and interlacing the images vertically. It's something that can be switched on and off (in fact, there will be some 3DS games released without any 3D ability at all), it's not "part of the game" like it was some engine part that can be removed.

Hell, there's a homebrew plugin for the PSP to add 3D ability in the same sort of manner (but using tinted glasses).
    http://psp.dashhacks.com/2011/11/06/psp-3d-plugin-prx-v22-released

Anyways the DS and 3DS aren't the same thing. I stated I wished Nintendo would have changed the damn name because calling it the "3DS" makes people think it's a DS with 3D ability. It's not. It's a new system with new games. New games that use a new format that the DS can't read, using new hardware that the DS does not have, doing calculations the DS can't do, at a speed the DS can't reach, and expecting to output at a screen resolution the DS does not support.

This is not possible, because a 3DS game is NOT a 3D DS game.

Nintendo just sucks at differentiating things.

Dood, what if we removed the 3 from the PS3?

Would we be able to play Uncharted 3 on our PS emulators???

Okay, do you know why the roms are so huge? Did the graphics just increase? For some releases that have both 3DS and DS games, I've seen both and they look pretty much similiar.
