I'm not sure if it's been discussed before, but the Nintendo Video app stores the videos in the SD card, and they seem to be located in
SD:\Nintendo 3DS\0b8ef6742ed57d44d18621aa43ad6206\7e2d00b14760aef4534430320002544d\extdata\00000000\000004aa\00000000
(at least in my card).

there are six files, all 52,016KB, which i think are the actual videos(there are 3 videos in the Nintendo Video app) with an .app extension, but I don't know the file type.
Does anybody know?

Only Nintendo.

It's their own custom proprietary format.

i know where you're thinking of taking this... if it helps, that Puss in Boots 3D trailer had FotoKem emblazoned on its last frame. seems they did the conversion from 3D format to whatever format the Nintendo Video uses.

also, we'll have better luck once the 3D video recorder app comes. we'll be able to record our own videos, which i doubt will be signed, which hackers and video experts can tinker and tear it apart, pinpointing its format. after a while, when the format has been fully identified and replicated by replacing recorded videos with other content not made by the app, then we can start expecting converters to appear. when that happens, prepare to start converting Bluray 3D rips and putting them on the 3DS.

sweet. my dream comes true then. Avatar 3D, on my 3DS. and 3D cornographic films.

Not necessarily. However, all the files stored on the SD card are encrypted, so no one could tell.
My shot is they are simply using the old ActImagine/Mobiclip codec as on DS, but with two video streams (one per eye).

i'm hoping they're just using downsampled 3D formats, like the ones they use on Bluray (MVC). then it'd be just whatever protection scheme the app gets going on, if it has one.

that's what I thought at first, but I'm a noob when it comes to encryption, and only tried with puyotools and the usual Wii formats.

3DS' hardware is not powerful enough to decode H.264 (AVC) video.

They let you take pics off the 3ds which you can view in 2d, so I didn't see why they wouldn't let you with videos.
It would just be silly not to. :P

Well, it is perfectly possible for Nintendo to encrypt all the videos recorded by 3DS with an assymetric crypt.
So, videos could be shared & viewed by everyone, but recorded only using 3DS, so that no one could create a converter and convert regular movies.

well, we'll all know once hackers take a look at the files themselves.

3DS' hardware is not powerful enough to decode H.264 (AVC) video.

Because we know the exact specs of the 3DS, right?

No, but I'm taking an educated guess.
Usually, H.264 is decoded by GPU. Pica200 has no such option out of the box, and has no programmable pixel shaders to implement it.
When it comes to 3DS' CPU, it is mostly likely 2 x ARM11 268 MHz. This is not enough to decode 800x240 H.264 video stream in realtime.

A guess is still a guess. Besides, Nintendo loves to do "custom" stuff to their hardware.

The resolution of the 3DS is 400x240(x2 for 3D). Just sayin'.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
