http://www.ebay.com/itm/Best-Digital-Mini-1080P-Full-HDMI-USB-HD-TV-Hard-Drive-Media-Player-MKV-Blue-/271001259113?pt=US_Internet_Media_Streamers&hash=item3f18ef0c69#ht_3787wt_952

It supports MKV, MP4, AVI, and several other formats. It can output via HDMI, composite AV, and a couple others. It also comes with a remote. I have a ton of Blu-Ray rips between 4-8GB's, and it'd be awesome to put them on a flash drive and watch them on our home theater without having to hook up my smartphone or laptop (which can't support 1080p actually).

It also supports subtitles (.srt), zoom, etc. I'm currently waiting on a response to if this thing supports embedded subtitles in MKV rips.

Anyone tried one of these before? They're based in the USA (WA), and they accept refunds, so worst case scenario, I pay $2-4 for the return shipping if this thing sucks. If this works as well as it seems this could be the answer to my prayers =D.

never heard of it. seems pretty cheap, not much of a risk. i would get something you can also stream to tho.

i have a hard drive attached to my tv and i used to put all my movies and shows on it, but now it has become such a drag to copy files over so i just stream from my computer. except for 1080p files, they get choppy over wifi so those i put on the hard drive, but then you have to split them if they are over 4 gigs.

While its cheap , I would not deal with the person , when it comes to ebay , I look for people with a min of 99.9 rating , and nothing less than 99.8 ....and always read the negative feed back , and check where they are mailing from.

It looks functional, albeit cheap. The interface is probably going to be fairly basic/terrible, so don't go in expecting something along the lines of an Apple TV or Roku.

The one thing I can guarantee for you is that the seller is probably reselling it for a higher price off of a discount chinese electronics wholesaler, like dealextreme or similar.
I'll look around to see if I can find it for cheaper.

Also what's the point of that US badge-thing? It's obviously made in China.

You might want to look into one of the many streaming boxes available if you have a decent wifi connection.
I know CNET in particular raves about the Roku LT ($50) or the Roku HD ($60).

EDIT: Here's the same thing for $5 less (+shipping) with suspiciously similar pictures. Looks like the same pen and everything.

except for 1080p files, they get choppy over wifi so those i put on the hard drive, but then you have to split them if they are over 4 gigs.

That's only if you have a FAT32 file system I believe. That limitation doesn't apply to NTFS or newer formatted drives.

It's an off-brand from China (shipped from usa though), but I've never had much of a problem with Chinese knock-offs (except flash drives). There is one that streams, but I don't want to mess with it, streaming is always too choppy, and I'd rather wait for it to transfer to my drive then have to split it up and also not be able to play 1080p files,

Thanks for your input. My birthday's in a couple weeks, I'll ask my parents for it, lol.

Edit: @air2004, I'll check his feedback, thanks.

@rad140 I appreciate it, lmk if you find it any cheaper. I edited my post and changed the item to a different one (didn't think I'd get reply's this fast!), the reason for the US symbol is because it's shipped in USA. I don't like streaming because it's always choppy with 1080p files. I have all my movies on a 2TB HDD so I don't mind moving it around between my PC and this media player to watch movies.

i understand the limitation, the issue is these devices usually don't support ntfs and the specs don't say if it does. at least my tv only supports fat32 but even if it did ntfs, i'm on mac and i wouldn't be able to transfer to it.

I've had a similar device in the past. It did ok, but had compatability problems with certain codecs. It's not difficult to convert media into something more universally accepted, but each time you convert you lose a little of the quality.

These days I either stream via PS3 or just use my iPad.
