Ok guys, some news. I just called my friend (ripping it at his house). He said the ripper crashed at 50%. So it read and ripped the first layer but could not do the second layer yet. Of course the program we are using is still in its beta stages. He is talking to some guys to see if they can decypher it.

I doubt the ripper would crash right in the middle at 50%. Sounds odd...
that seems about right... i'm sure theres 50% of the games data on each layer and since only one layer can be ripped its crashing at 50%.... but i'm just guessing i know nothing about any of this

Thats what someone lying would assume, in reality the layers are not weighted equally, and bottom layer holds more data then the top.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

If it really did crash because of a DL issue, the first layer (bottom) would crash at 60% or so.

It is in fact weird, the game doesnt take 8.5GB of space, it takes less... so 50% sounds like fake to me...
Yeah new stuff D1MX,
I was talking to some sources, teams are creating their own rippers for DL discs, it also seems the game doesn't work with wiikey for the following:

Wiikey is the best known modchip having 80% of sales worldwide, its Nintendo's worst enemy, so they found a way to detect it. Wiikey team is working on ripping the game (they might be ripping it as we speak) though still they don't know if a firmware is needed for the backup or not. Anyways the game will release SOON!

D1MX sorry to make you pull out your hood and kill me or w/e. I wasn't trying to yell at you but a while ago you complained about not being able to find a copy and I posted the same thing and I assumed you just hadn't seen it. So I capitalized it as for w/e reason alt + b open my bookmarks and doesn't bold anything - anyways sorry for yelling. I do have to say though that you must be a pretty funny person in real life - props on keep the spirit light.

Now about this update on Brawl... I'm getting the Jap copy in about three days and I haven't installed my wiikey yet... I hada feeling I should hold off until I knew if I needed to or not... so putting brawl in with no modchip and doing the update when my console is on a 3.1U system (american wii) shouldn't brick it right? I should just get extra channels in Japanese? Then can I install the wiikey and use its region free setting?

actually 50% sounds about rite...

remember the wii reads the data from outside to inside... thats y all the iso files are the same size. Even if the actually game data doesn't require the whole disk, unused data space is made for the iso so when it burns it goes all the way to the outside of the disk.

So for dual layer, both layers have to be filled cuz wii reads from outside to inside...

Gamecube does the same

Yeah, unmodded Wii wont't read the disc at all. Not even to update. And if you install the Wiikey, it still wont read it unless an update comes out.

you NEED a modchip on a different region Wii to play SSBX so in your case a JPN game on a NTSCU Wii. Howevere, the Wiikey is confirmed as non-working at the moment until an update is released. Now, you could go for a cyclowiz, which is confirmed working. Also note that without a modchip putting the OFFICIAL game in your wiii will yield in nothing. It will not run, work or play. Your wii is not moddede qand therefore not region free. You still need a modchip.

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but I'm pretty sure everyone will tell you the same. Without a modchip, your American Wii won't even recognize the game disc as it's from another region. You won't even be able to update, you'll just get a question mark when you pop the game in.

As of now, you dont' have the right tools to play the import you'll be getting in 3 days. You're going to need another modchip. From what's been discussed so far, your choices seem to be the cyclowiz (which is hard to find these days), putting together a YAOSM (which I'm guessing you don't have the knowledge to do), or waiting for the dump which I believe will be released working with Wiikey via a firmware update.
