i've gone through three of them for all the same reasons, they were mostly used and i have a five year old brother who uses it and he broke 2 of them, is there a way to prevent this, they broke by the screen actually falling apart after my brother kept on moving it after seeing how it opens and closes so fast.

Honestly it's mostly luck. However people in the past have noted that it's a design flaw and has been most prevalent in white DS lites.
Plastics use structured polymers for dyes, and like mixing in any ingredient it slightly changes the texture and durability of the result plastic. The fact that this design flaw wasn't picked up on indicated that during product testing Nintendo either used other colors then the final stock white, used more durable/expensive plastics, or a combination of the two.

That's a diagnosis but the prescription is to either completely replace your DS's plastic shell or use a case to absorb the stress as a preventative measure. A case also covers up the ugly crack if it's too late.

AFAIK it's a design flaw and will happen eventually, with or without a 5 year old messing with it. Mine went on my DSLite within 6 months of owning it, I replaced the case with one from Shoptemp about 4 months ago and so far, all is well.

You can try cases, which would protect the DS from its hinge breaking.

If you have an 5-year old brother who's careless, try these one

Or if you want something that protects but not so humongous try the

My brother has the nerf armor naruses showed and it's awesome. A metallic crystal case is cool but it's excessive for my tastes. Plastic crystal cases are a bit cheaper and work about as well, an dof course everything is cheaper online.
