I'm still confused as to whether the SD-Gecko is necessarily the same as the SD Media Launcher. I wish there was a comprehensive guide for all this stuff; there seems to be so much outdated information circulating.

I'll say. You can still buy the official Datel product for less than that: https://www.codejunkies.com/Products/SD-Media-Launcher__EF000580V.aspx .
Datel SD Media Launcher is a software – but it comes with a SD-Gecko. @Archerite pointed out the problem: The software is limited to 2GB SDs which is not really helpful.

The article https://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Booting_Homebrew is up to date as far as I can tell. Do you think it requires some more detailed guide or tutorial? Shouldn't be a problem to create one.

[…]If that expensive disk boots directly into swiss with bigger SD card support....it could be an option. :)
Indeed a nice thing. But to be honest $59 for a (passive) SD adapter and a Mini-DVD containing open source software is expensive. I understand that the equipment for producing the discs isn't exactly cheap. The question is if this makes sense compared to GCLoader.
Very disappointing that the idea over here wasn't feasible. Modifying a consumer DVD writer to get full control over the laser does sound pretty cool.

The price is insane and in my opinion there is also far too little information about the product. Why do they not just show the disc they are selling? I tried finding more information about it but other than this thread here....there is nothing! It might be google translating my search "GC SD-Drive Kit" into: Ohh, you probably meant to search for the GCLoader instead? Here ya go! :D But even if the product exists and does all it promesis....I don't think it's worth it for that price. If it was $39 then maybe it would be a better option. Still expensive...but less overpriced! And if they are smart swiss is not even on that disc at all. All you need is a loader that searchers for boot.dol on the SD card.

I remember reading a detailed article about the GameCube disc protection a long time ago. It went into a lot of the details about how datel defeated the protection and got their disc booting. From what I read in that link you posted I think it might actually be possible....but with all the available options these days...why bother? Boot look at the FreeDVDboot thing that just happend last year on the PlayStation 2!! There is just something cool about burning a disc and running software on an unmodded console! :D

Personally, I am very happy with my GCLoader now that I have actually used it! :D Bought it in September, installed it, tested it. yay it works! And then the cube was put on a shelf for months without being used!! :shy: With the Datel disc I think booting my homebrew took about 45sec every single time! Now it's less than 2s for my screen to sync after turning it on, hahaha :D

BTW: Sorry for hijacking this thread for off topic discussions! :shy:

The SD Gecko is just an adapter that you can put an SD card in and fit's in the memory card slot. The SD Media Launcher is the boot disc from Datel that allows to load homebrew from the SD card.

Yes, of course – my question is whether the widget that comes with the SD Media Launcher is necessarily the same as the SD-Gecko you can get elsewhere.

It's like I said earlier – all I really want to do is back up my memory cards and my old Game Boy saves. Alas, there is no GC Noob Paradise thread.

I have my black one with GBA player. But I’ve been using my modded Wii lately to play GC games more conveniently.
And in good quality without ponying up for a GCVideo HDMI (technically enhanced DVI) solution)

I still have mine and just modded it with a GCLoader PNP and bought a broken Jap one for parts as when I switched out the shell for a full size disc one because I was going to put the Xeno chip in and didn't I didn't realize I threw out the mounting plate that the GCLoader mounts to so I swapped my disc drive to the Jap one as the listing said the disc drive was not working and got a Jap one for disc's using my Action Replay to unlock the region and USA one for iso's. Paid dirt cheap on Ebay for the Jap one as it was the system only with no cables or controllers.

Why not the SD2SP2? I have a Xeno in my GC, so if there's a downside to the SD2SP2 I'd like to hear it. (I have a couple in my amaz cart, will prbbly buy soon)
I believe the sd2sp2 has the same speed and compatibility (in terms of isos) as using an sd card in the memory card slot.
it's not perfect, but recently it has been very good.
gc loader is nearly a perfect solution, super high compatibility, don't have to worry about it being fast enough etc. it's getting a 2.0 fw update pretty soon which will make it even better. plus no need for any entry points since the gc loader does that too. if you were just to have an sd card with swiss on it, you'd still need a way to boot into swiss.

I keep all my old consoles.
That being said I rather play on Dolphin at higher resolutions than play on the original GC or Wii as most of the games just look so much better in HD, like they were made for it. By comparison they look rather bad on modern TVs with original hardware. Maybe I've been spoiled. I used to be all about the gameplay and not care about graphics and that is still true to a degree but... If I can have the same game with better graphics then why wouldn't I.

I have one with a few games and the GBA player, but it's been disconnected for years and unused for even longer, probably since when I got a Wii.

Thanks for the reply. I have since watched a couple yt vids on the gcloader and have come to agree with you on all points. Only downsides to the gcloader are 1) price, and 2) can't get one even if you have the money. Out of stock. Don't know if theres supposed to be another batch coming, I'll need to look into it. I was thinking on dropping the bucks on a GBA consolizer, but if I added the gcloader and a retro-bit prism to my cube, I wouldn't need a GBA consolizer.

I'd save $10 and get the carby instead, upgradable via homebrew (very simple. just run the update file from swiss)
https://insurrectionindustries.com/product/carby-v2/
and yeah, gc loader isn't always in stock, but thankfully since 'many' people have one now and that it's not brand new, it shouldn't sell out in hours when it does come back in stock. I noticed it was in stock for at least a few days when I last checked.
There are gc loader clones you can get, but I'm not sure anyone has actually gotten them to boot isos, and I think it is only really used to boot into swiss. I might be wrong about that now though.
But of course, best to get the real thing, will be upgradable etc, assured to work.
