How to perform a System Transfer without losing non-legitimate titles

Nintendo 3DS System Transfer Tutorial by PrincessLillie

"How do I do a system transfer without losing my homebrew?"
This is a question that seems to get asked a lot, so I figured I'd write a tutorial on how to do it to put an end to the countless threads.

What You Need
  • The latest release of faketik (the .3dsx file)

Instructions
  1. Ensure that both of your devices are updated by going to System Settings, then “Other Settings”, then going all the way to the right and using “System Update”.
    • Updates while using boot9strap and Luma3DS are safe. However, please make sure the Luma3DS version is 10.2.1 or newer before updating.
    • If you are on arm9loaderhax (Luma3DS v7.0.5 or older), please follow A9LH to B9S.
    • If the System Update gives you an error, set your DNS settings to “auto”.
    • If the System Update still gives you an error, follow CTRTransfer, then try updating again.
  2. Perform a PC-based System Transfer as normal.
  3. Install Luma3DS and boot9strap on your new system with Nintendo Homebrew's 3DS Hacks Guide.
    • If your system already has boot9strap installed, this step is not required.
  4. Power off your device.
  5. Insert your SD card into your computer.
  6. Create a folder named '3ds' on the root of your SD card if it does not already exist.
  7. Copy faketik.3dsx to the /3ds/ folder on your SD card.
  8. Reinsert the SD card into your device.
  9. Power on your device.
  10. Open the Homebrew Launcher.
  11. Launch faketik from the list of homebrew.
  12. Wait patiently while faketik generates new tickets for your non-legitimate applications and games.
    • This may take some time if you have a lot of non-legitimate applications or games. Please be patient.
  13. Once it finishes, press START or B to exit.
  14. Close the Homebrew Launcher and return to the HOME Menu.

Your non-legitimate titles should now appear on the HOME Menu. They may be wrapped. If you have a lot of titles, you can mass-unwrap them with Cthulhu. As for your save data, it should still be intact when you start your games.

If anything is wrong with this guide, please let me know, either by replying or via DM. Thank you.

Just perfomed a system transfer from an Old 3DSXL on CFW to a New 3DS on OFW and using the instructions here worked like a charm, many thanks !
I will make sure to direct anybody in the same need as me to this guide, there seem to be quite a few discussions going on as to what is the path to follow for the situation I was in.

What if my source's SD Card's space is bigger than my target's SD card space? Must they have the same?
Depends on if you have used more than the targets capacity. If no, then you are fine to transfer. If yes, you are going to need to reduce the data on the bigger card to match what the second card has.

This is a bit of a "Your Mileage May Vary" case. If you've used up more than the total space of your target SD card on your current source SD card, then you can either delete content before the transfer or just take the source SD card and put it into the target system after the transfer is done. You really don't need the target SD card after everything is said and done.

Edit: Questions removed because they answer themselves. I literally can just put the old SD card in the new system. I feel stupid. Ah well.

Just making sure: would it still work if I hack the new system with a separate sd card and then transfer over and put in the old memory card?
I don't see why it wouldn't.

Why wouldn't this work with a wireless transfer?
Using the PC-based transfer is both a time-saving maneuver and a safety measure. With the wireless transfer, I'm not sure if non-legitimate titles would be ignored by the transfer tool and, in effect, deleted by the source system format at the end. That, and you can just put your current SD Card into the target system after the PC-based transfer without actually touching a PC - you don't have to wait for hours while the system moves everything and you can run faketik to restore non-legitimate titles at the end. Generally, using the PC-based transfer is faster and safer.
I'm not saying it definitely won't work, I'm just saying using the wireless transfer is slower and comes with the POSSIBILITY of losing your non-legitimate titles. Use the PC-based transfer to save time and be safer when dealing with non-legitimate titles.
(This information may not be factual, I have never performed a wireless transfer on a CFW 3DS. YMMV.)

Quick question, I just bought a JPN n3DS and I have a US o3DS, is it possible to do the system transfer cross region?
if not, would changing the JPN region to US allow me to perform the system transfer?

Cross regional System Transfer is basically impossible. Except for user specific information like the NNID and Friend Code found on CTRNAND, you can elect to copy or clone your Nintendo 3DS folder with SDTransfer methods.
Refer several posts back regarding DSiWare games & saves.

Isn't possible with the same Nintendo 3DS folder, and the original movable.sed on the target console?

EDIT: Ah... already saw that you refer to that.
Yeah, I was thinking about cloning the Nintendo 3DS folder and making and SDTransfer with the same movable.sed file.

Yeah, I was thinking about cloning the Nintendo 3DS folder and making and SDTransfer with the same movable.sed file.
Homebrew or unauthorized System Transfer where you yourself move or copy the movable.sed to another 3DS system is asking for trouble. That file contains a copy of the LFCS, which is the last 0x8 bytes of the LocalFriendCodeSeed_B and is the first half of the 0x30 slot KeyY tied to the <ID0> encryption.

You can't access Nintendo eShop unless you have a valid or signed movable.sed. There's also the problem of possibly getting both (source) and (target) systems banned when using the same movable.sed with the exact KeyY when accessing eShop, Theme Shop, and other online services at the same time.

The difference between an official Nintendo vs homebrew System Transfer boils down to whether or not there's a server side record that the (source) (target) system received and is allowed to use the (target) (source) system's original movable.sed. There's a mysterious 0x4 bytes string found in the movable.sed at block offsets 0x120–123 that changes from an official System Transfer and is believed to be involved with the server side record keeping.

Great, I've read the SDTransfer steps, doesn't look too complicated and will give it a go, however, do I need to do the region change or can I leave the JPN n3DS as it is?

No need to region change the 3DS firmware. Don't Format System Memory as that'll erase the Nintendo 3DS folder and the user profile.

If your SD cards have just as much free space as the entire size of the Nintendo 3DS folder and you don't have that much games, dlcs, and updates (32 GB or less is reasonable, anything bigger might take too long), you can SDTransfer with GodMod9 only as seen in the 2nd thread. It's a little easier but takes much longer decrypting, extracting, and re-encrypting through GodMode9 vs ninfs.

Got quite the scare when I never got a chance to select PC based transfer and it just started doing something, then one system errors out at the end and then I'm stuck trying to connect online for 5 minutes.
But it eventually finished doing things correctly and the rest worked out and it's fine now.

Did faketik work with the wireless transfer? Mine just did the same thing...:(

Yes, faketik worked, just let the transfer do its thing, wait patiently and once it finishes on its own, you can move the sd card over and use faketik (note, you need to use the download play app to enter homebrew menu)

I hope you saved a home menu layout before the move, as after faketik has done its thing, all titles will be restored to the home screen
