The Worms series will be getting a new game this year

Information may be scant right now, but what we do know for a fact is that Worms is returning later this year. Publisher Team 17 just confirmed that a new Worms game is slated for release in 2020, offering a teaser trailer that promises more information to come "soon". This will be the first new game in the series since 2016's Worms: WMD, which released on all current-generation consoles and PC. Worms is a long-running "strategy" franchise, which saw its first release all the way back in 1995, for DOS, the Sega Saturn, the Amiga, and other retro platforms.

Well no shit because the first release of the game was from 2006
ha ok... it has been updated so it's not like it's the exact version from 2006.
the thing is it's STILL like 'old worms', instead of what worms has become over the last few games.

How exactly is the latest game, WMD, not like a refined version of the old Worms games (like 2, Armageddon, and World Party)? Sure, it has more modes you can optionally play, like forts, or things like vehicles you can toggle on and off, but the core mode is still there in the style of the best games in the franchise and even better if you ask me.

The series went south after Worms World Party in my opinion. In fact Armageddon reigns supreme. The amount of hours I put into that game is unfathomable.
This for sure, I put an ungodly amount of time in WWP and Armageddon when I was younger, but the latter games just don't tickle that same itch for me. WWP is still the very first game I install on any XP PC I get my hands on, and I always make sure to keep the remastered Armageddon and WWP installed on my gaming PCs whenever I feel the need to play again.

Oh man... the memories... I recall playing with my neighbors all stuck together in front of 1 screen, sharing 1 mouse and keyboard, taking turns to throw everything at each other. Good 'ol days of Worms Armageddon.

Honestly for me the very first game was perfect already. I spent hours playing that game with my brothers and friends. I never really got excited for any of the sequels.

For me, as a franchise grows it starts getting bogged down. Too many options. Fighting games get too many characters to bother learning them all, racing games get too many different types of vehicles or customisation options, and games like this just get too many weapons to bother learning them all.

My perfect wish for this would be a remake of the first game, with added online mode which can be played in a real "turn-based" style rather than live.

That's never going to happen though, obviously and unfortunately.

I thought so as well but Worms: WMD is actually really good and I'm still very happy with it.
Always liked Worms 2 the most back in the days but WMD (despite the new "worms design" which I don't like a 100 % but it's still ok) is a really strong 2D entry and is fun even on the Switch.
And that's the reason why I wonder what they will come up with now. But if it's bad I still have WMD so I'm relaxed looking forward to it.

You might be the first person I have met to swing that way (for others playing along I will go with the delineation of simple pixel art vs the cartoony thing, depending upon how you want to count then the simple pixel art games have a few entries between "director's cut" and what have you but it is not enough that we have to call them different games by the standards of the day). Now we certainly played the first a lot (PS1 version mainly, and despite admirable effort on the controls it was a bit lacking compared to mouse efforts, but others too) and had a great time but between 2 and Armageddon (I prefer 2 but I could see making a case for Armageddon) I found them a far superior game.
Create a map could be kind of broken and some of the super weapons if you turned them up to 11 as it were (which, being greasy teenagers, was wont to happen at times) could break the game but with a few house rules and in game settings*, especially when someone does the "that guy" thing and gets a bit too competent with a ninja rope, 2 and Armageddon became fantastic.

*I realise that in the face of my laughing at similar in the pokemon and smash brothers "competitive" scenes such a thing might be said to reflect poorly on me but I will make it anyway.
