Half-Life is back, in a new trailer for Half-Life: Alyx

Valve sent the internet into a state of shock, when they revealed that a new Half-Life game was coming soon. Teased as a virtual reality game, more information was promised to be shown in a trailer. Now, that time has come, and we've got our first look at Half-Life: Alyx, which takes place between Half-Life 1 and 2. The game will be a full-length title, priced at $59.99, and will release in March of 2020, for the Valve Index, Vive, Windows MR, and Oculus headsets.

Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival.

Holy shit that is impressive. The physics and graphics look amazing for a VR title. Definitely going to have to turn down some settings to get decent performance on my Pimax 5K.

Along with Portal: Talking Potato, and Left4Dead: OK Boomer.
That would make it 4 games. Millennials...

It's worth noting the game will be free for anyone who's bought Valve Index hardware, whether that be the HMD, controllers, or full package. That's according to the Steam page and the game's website.

Super happy about that since I have the Index controllers.

I was able to buy the valve index kit today thanks to valve opening the floodgates to Canada after the announcement. I'm pretty excited to play a lot of VR games, even ones that I got in a bundle for dirt cheap.

Err...what? A Half-Life game plus a Portal game plus a Left4Dead game equals four? Might wanna check your math again there. If you were triggered over the 'OK Boomer' thing for some reason, it's just a play on words, since y'know...boomers are a thing in Left4Dead.

I ordered mine today too but just because the half-life news was too much excitement. I was planning on waiting a little longer. I kinda blew my wallet prematurely.

Who knows, maybe in Valve land it goes 1 -> 2 -> 4

lol, well reading without my glasses made it look like a comma instead of a colon. So i read Portal, talking potato, and left for dead. I had to look up
the "ok, boomer" reference and hence my reply. I didn't realize I was a boomer since I don't technically qualify by age but philosophically I'm definitely one.

The thing that excites me the most about this is that they're calling it a "full-length" game. There has never been a full-length AAA VR game before. Both Half Life 1 and 2 were genre-defining, and this could be the same.

I will now be dedicating the rest of 2019 to getting rich so that I can upgrade my PC and my Vive to an Index, and so I can buy a new house with more space than my current one. Wish me luck!

That's actually a good incentive to get those considering they cost about as much as a gaming PC...

There are actually quite a few full-length AAA VR games, but only one or two that are VR-ONLY. Skyrim, Doom 3, Tetris Effect, The Solus Project, and RE7 as you mentioned. For VR-only games I'd argue that Sairento VR and Arizona Sunshine fit the bill. They aren't technically AAA, but they are full-length games and have high-end graphics.

The controllers cost about as much as a good GPU, but building a full gaming PC for $300 would be quite the feat.

buying them used can easily go for ~$100 for the set. So make sure if you buy a WMR headset that it comes with the controllers.
Can confirm. Trying to find some for a reasonable price rn. I really should have not been cheap and just spent the extra $50-75 to get some controllers :/

Those minimum specs are making my wallet hurt, as I don't have a beefy VR capable PC or even a VR set. That's looking to be a fair chunk of AUD.

What would be the best VR headset to buy at the moment? VIVE?
Depends on your definition of best. There are several headsets out now with better resolution than Vive, including the Valve Index and Vive Pro. If you're looking to get something at a more reasonable price point though, Vive is a good option, along with the Windows Mixed Reality headsets or offerings by Oculus.

That wouldn't work. How would developers convert mechanics specifically made for VR to mouse and keyboard?
What if the game was designed and for mouse and keyboard then adapted to VR, that's a possibility. I mean the worst case scenario they can use VR to Keyboard/mouse converter, in sure it exists lol

The most expensive.
