I do use a smoothwall, but I use my PC for gaming and no other OS has XP beat in that regard. And damn, there are awesome PC games this year. Let me list some things you won't be playing on Linux
STALKER
BioShock
Call of Duty 4
Crysis
Hellgate: London
The Witcher
Kane and Lynch
World in Conflict

Are those not worth a good firewall? Because that and weekly scheduled scans are the only thing I need to keep XP problem free.

Not everyone has PCs good enough for playing those that's why there are far more console gamers then PC gamers. I'm positive most of those games can be played on either one of the current gen consoles. Crysis seems to be the only one on that list that can't be played? But guess what? I can live without playing one game.

Nice, switch the subject pack to gaming. Are you some sort of one trick pony?, at least give me a new argument, seems like your only defense for windows is how uber leet the games are and how the graphics "pwn".

edit: gaming isn't the be-all-end-all of computer use, there are far more important things you can do with a computer. Also, nice try downplaying smoothwall.

World in Conflict - It's an RTS.
STALKER - Great game, great atmosphere - very grey and depressing. PC only
Crysis - new engine with sanbox editor, good enough to make your own game with

FPS are always better on PC, and I have a 360 pad for racing/stylistic games (Prince of Persia, ect)

My PC cost $800, can run CoD4 at 19 (lowest) to 60 FPS on max settings. And I can't stress how awesome STALKER, it's 7 endings, and all the mods for it are.

I love smoothwall! I stream movies from my PC to my xbox (xbmc) and laptop - it's a couple of clicks in XP.

Time to break out the bullet points! (How do I do bullet points...?)

XP Pros
Very easy to install programs, very high compatability
This includes hardware, it's the most supported by hardware manufacturers
"Games for Windows" - Awesome games out on PC
Very customizable - TweakXP, nlite, many programs for themes

XP Cons
Needs a firewall of some kind
Needs regular antiviral, anti spyware scans
Closed source
Botnets
0day hacks

All of the negative aspects I've experienced (besides 0day stuff...*shivers*) can be fixed with a hardware firewall and heuristic antivirus programs. Currently uses 10k of my 2GB of ram

Linux/*BSD

Pros:
-Its free, comes with a large collection of free software
-Easy to install(via live cd)
-Package management makes program installation easy
-open source
-no known widespread viruses/spyware/malware, very stable
-very customizable
-great community
-supports a lot of architectures and low end pcs

Cons:
-not many games
-many commercial applications are missing, although free ones offer some of the same features
-some drivers missing, majority of hardware is supported
-sometimes hard, command line is needed at times

ok now someone post the mac pros and cons, then whenever a OS flamewar starts we can just post a link to each of these posts and get it over with.

Especially when Linux is so non-functional and difficult to use.

non-functional? i think you have the two confused. there is nothing you can do with windows (or mac os) that i can't do in Linux. as far as difficult to use, all it takes to learn is half a brain, a moderate understanding of english, and a lack of fear of trying something different.
I think you would have a pretty tough time running the latest games at decent speeds.

Looking back, I see this whole argument was started because flai took my comment out of context.

My apologies. Would kellyan95 and flai please return to their respective fanboy corners, and lets continue this thread in its original vein, which was answering xcalibur's questions.

Choosing an operating system based on appearance leads me to think you're an idiot.

After this sentence, it makes me wonder why this Thread is still alive. Don't base an OS on it's looks.

Yep, it's true that Windows gets Viruses very often... Not the case with me I guess. Virusless for 3 years now.
Just gotta be careful at what you look at..

Linux is a very nice OS. Go for it if you don't like your current one, or just want a change.

Don't worry about it guys. I don't need it anymore.
I think I'll stick to the liveCD if I need my Linux fix.
biggrin.gif

I decided not to go through with the install after I realised it would just be taking up space on a small hard drive where i need every megabyte.
Maybe I'll install it after i finish 24 S1 & S2, Heroes S1, Prison Break S2 and My name is Earl S2.
nyanya.gif

I only have a small hard drive so I need all the space i can get.

One of the things I really like about Linux is all the remote functionality. Sure, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that either use their computer mainly for gaming, or someone who isn't very good with computers (because then they would have to ask me every time they needed help, instead of asking just about anyone, who knows Windows). But if you have a genuine interest in computers I would definitely recommend Linux, you can learn alot playing around with the command-line, checking out the /proc dir, compiling your own kernel, setting up your system exactly how you want it... And also, like I mentioned, the remote functionality. I run lots and lots of programs from my computer at home when I'm at work. I use CenterICQ for all my IM-functionality (ICQ/MSN/Jabber/GTalk), BitchX for IRC, rTorrent for downloading torrents, and sometimes even LinuxDC++ via VNC if I want something downloaded for when I get home. Ofcourse most of this could be done with VNC or some similiar solution in windows, but it's alot slower, since it wasn't written with networked graphics in mind, like X11. (yeah yeah, I know I know, there's always cygwin
biggrin.gif
)

Oh and like some people already mentioned, Package-management is a great feature! If my parents actually would have been using Linux, and I wanted to install say OpenOffice for them, I could just ssh to their computer and run 'sudo apt-get install openoffice' and it would download, unpack, install and configure the program for them, and they would find it under their 'start-menu'. Nowadays I have to guide my mother over the phone when she want's to install Acrobat-Reader instead. Not the easiest thing to do
biggrin.gif

But sure, if you don't really care what you are using, Windows is probably the best way to go. I would say I use Linux because I think it's fun, and once you know it - and have an installation that is configured the way you want, it actually is a lot smoother to get things done than it is with windows.

Gah, sorry for the ramblings... I'm just bored I guess...

I was thinking about Dual booting Ubuntu and Vista with my new computer but the problem about Linux is what it comes to drives. I use a USB Modem and Homecall doesn't have Linux drives for it
frown.gif
. Thats the one thing stopping me to install Ubuntu on my new computer (which i'm getting soon)

Thanks for the link Ze but i wont bother doing anything with this computer. Its fine for regular use but its a piece of crap for everything else.
I'm going to make sure to get me a decent computer when I do and not let my dad get it for me.
Should be in 7 months or so, I can't wait.

That's cool that's cool. If your currently running Windows though and have had that computer for a long time I suggest you run CCleaner it's a great program that deletes unnecessary files. It doesn't delete any documents or such though so don't worry about losing important files.

Those are illegal and you need those mainly if you forgot your password or something, it's not really useful for anything other than recovering files and/or passwords and such.

tried to install ubuntu/xubuntu on a old laptop and on a old desktop pc and my own desktop... HARWARE PROBLEMS!!!!! Couldnt get it to work even with the help of the forum/irc community... Untill the driver support is fixed and untill they make a ultra super noob introduction guide i wont touch linux again. i tried to install 7.10 of both OS's + ati drivers not supported sucks BIG time. and the fact that to watch a some divx movies and listen a mp3 you still have to do alot of stuff. find ou the right packages... so dont tell me it is super newbie friendly.

this maybe sounds super negative. I really was open minded to ubuntu cause vista in my opinion isnt that great but im going back to windows XP.

Seems you didn't try hard enough if you couldn't find ATI drivers. Linux is super newbie friendly most of the time I'd say, sometimes it becomes a little harder.

its system settings -> advanced -> restricted drivers -> click ati -> done. If thats too hard then...

Not illegal if you build it with your legal copy of windows and use it on your PC. And they are very useful - web browsing, antivirus/antispyware, partition tools, plus thousands of other programs that you can add yourself. Enough to fix any software problem you may be having with a PC, enough for web browsing if you don't even have a HDD
