If you have B9S, there's a boot.firm file on the root of your SD card. Luma3DS is a CFW. B9S is an entrypoint for the CFW.

So, if no boot.firm on the root of your SD card, then you have A9LH: https://3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s
If there is a boot.firm on the root of your SD card, then you have B9S and can update by simply downloading the latest version of Luma3DS https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases/tag/v9.1, extracting the boot.firm file and putting it on your SD card, overwriting the old one.

After you figure out which method you're using, and then update to the latest version (if you're on A9LH still, update to B9S) of Luma3DS, you can then update your system to latest firmware.

Latest entrypoint is B9S, which can be loaded onto any 3DS model via certain DS flashcarts. There are also other free methods for going from stock to CFW. All in the guide I linked you to.

Hold (SELECT) while turning on the console. On the top of the upper screen it will say
Luma3DS v??? configuration

At the moment v9.1 is the current version
Luma v7.0.5 or older: A9LH→A9LH to B9S
Luma v7.1: Old version of B9S→updating B9S (simply replacing boot.firm will result in an error message)
Luma v8.0 or higher: newer version of B9S →Replace boot.firm (or do updating B9S anyway to copy the new firm to CTRNAND)
