PlayStation to adapt their IPs into film and TV through newly formed PlayStation Productions studio

Good video game movies are a hard commodity to come by, with most film adaptations of beloved game franchises having a tendency to fall into mediocrity, or be remembered purely for being terrible. PlayStation is looking to change that, however, with the formation of a new production studio that will be dedicated to bringing their IPs to both TV and film. Called PlayStation Productions, the division will be led by Asad Qizilbash, with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Shawn Layden overseeing all projects.

Shawn Layden said:
We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories. We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum.

Stating that PlayStation was tired of licensing out their IPs to other film studios, Qzilbash claims that his team will be better prepared to create movies and shows based off gaming franchises, as they are familiar with the properties, and know "what the PlayStation community loves". Sony Pictures will be funding these projects, though they will have no hand in creating them, with Layden stressing the fact that PlayStation Productions will have the money to take their time, hire the most suitable casts, and won't have to rush out any movies to meet strict deadlines.

Shawn Layden said:
We want to create an opportunity for fans of our games to have more touch points with our franchises. When fans beat a 40-50 hour game and have to wait three-four years for a sequel, we want to give them places they can go and still have more of that experience and see the characters they love evolve in different ways. This is a passion project for me [...] to be the first gaming entity to do something lasting and meaningful in a completely different medium is something I’d like to see us achieve here at PlayStation Productions.

You can see just by watching older video game adaptations that the screenwriter or director didn’t understand that world or the gaming thing. The real challenge is, how do you take 80 hours of gameplay and make it into a movie? The answer is, you don’t. What you do is you take that ethos you write from there specifically for the film audience. You don’t try to retell the game in a movie.

Time will tell if this venture will be a successful one for PlayStation, as the team appears to value taking things slow. PlayStation Productions seems to have the right mindset, but do you think they can pull off creating good TV shows and movies for their game franchises?

Please don't start your own streaming service. Streaming isn't cable.
They already kind of did that long ago, it's called Playstation Vue (though that only covers live TV streaming, iirc). There's also movies and whatnot available from PSN, so if anything, they'd probably sell whatever they make through there too.

uncharted could be fun, i mean uncharted is based on tomb raider, wihch is based on the movies of indiana jones which are amazing, if they make a decent casting and make indiana jones type of movie it could be amazing imo.

Last of us has potencial too to make some horror thriller type of movie, but those rarely end up good, specialy based on videogames.

God of war will be very tough, its fighthing style and such doesnt seem humanly possible so it would just be a huge cgi fest, and if cgi isnt totaly high budget then it will suck.

Shadow of the colossus could be a good one but meh they would probably screw it up big time.

Uncharted has the most chance of sucess seeing indiana jones already proved people will see a action packed fun tomb exploration movie done right.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

They made fucking Pixels and the Rachet and Clank movie. Just because they have experience doesn't mean they're good.
pixels wasnt bad imo, its just idiotic fun still not bad its watchable.didnt see ratchet clank so i cant say anything, the problem i guess is most fans didnt want to see cartoons and new fans dont know who ratchet and clank even are so yeah the movie lost money.

But what is the appeal? The IPs that Sony has that would make for a good movies, are already much more story filled and more drawn out experiences that essentially are interactive films, but with much more time to breath and reveal plot. Why would we need an Uncharted, God of War, or Last of Us movie, when these games already are cinematic experiences, in fact I'd argue their nature makes them better than a simple sit down and watch cinematic experience. Having said that, when you have a property with cartoony characters and the like, I can see the justification for making movies, like what we saw with Detective Pikachu, but Sony doesn't have a lot of active IPs like that, and the few that they have no one would be interested, regardless of how great we all know Knack is.

Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Postal and Dungeon Siege all had movies directed by Uwe Boll and all received negative reviews

I wonder if they realize that movies suck now a days and that the real gems are few and fare between and generally don't make it to the big screen and if so, in a limited release.

The people who think Detective Pikachu was a good movie shouln't worry too much, since they don't seem to have high standards anyways :P

It's funny how i'm seeing mostly negative comments by everyone just because it's Sony despite them having a lot of experience with making movies but when Nintendo anounced they would be doing movies and shows again the general reception was positive. It's clear how big the double standards are again when it comes to anything besides Nintendo

The upcoming Mario movie has a chance purely on not being live-action.

Its the same difference between Sonic Boom and whatever horrible thing is coming out late this year.

Still see it as double standards when it comes to Nintendo. Didn't see nearly as much negatively tainted comments when Nintendo anounced they would be doing movies and series again despite them having released quite shitty ones in the past. It's always double standards when it comes to Nintendo versus the rest
