Capcom announces its plug and play home arcade machine, the 'Capcom Home Arcade'

Not wanting to be left out of the retro gaming hype, Capcom has announced that it'll soon bring to the market its own console packed with retro games. Named the 'Capcom Home Arcade' and shaped in the form of the company's logo which is... basically colored alphabets of the company's name, this 22 x 74 x 11 cm nostalgia-oriented, plug-and-play device comes with 16 of "the best Capcom titles from the golden-age of arcade gaming". As its name implies, it will boast arcade-styled features like a pair of "competition class" arcade styled control sticks and face buttons for two players.

The company also notes that the 16 pre-installed games are from the original Capcom CPS1 and CPS2 arcade ROMs with emulation provided by FB Alpha, which Capcom certifies as "delivering an authentic & accurate arcade experience".
Speaking of games, here's the full list:
  • 1944: The Loop Master
  • Alien Vs. Predator
  • Armored Warriors
  • Capcom Sports Club
  • Captain Commando
  • Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness
  • Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
  • Eco Fighters
  • Final Fight
  • Ghouls ’N Ghosts
  • Gigawing
  • Mega Man: The Power Battle
  • Progear
  • Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting
  • Strider
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

Featuring a USB port for power and HDMI one for display, the Capcom Home Arcade also has onboard WiFi to share your single or co-op multi player scores to the Worldwide High Score Leaderboard to see how you match up against other players across the globe.

Capcom has announced that its Capcom Home Arcade will be available from all major gaming retailers from 25 October 2019 in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East and Russia. Pre-orders are also live from Amazon UK at £200.

I mean, a decent arcade stick/buttons is fairly expensive, but not that fuckin' expensive.

And for god's sake, if you're gonna charge $200 and make it that ugly, you gotta include a lot more than 16 Capcom games.

I'm sure it can, and it seems fairly complete. I guess they had to make it $200 if it includes two sticks and sets of buttons, but still gonna be really iffy for consumers when that's about the cost of a current-gen game console (used/refurb).

Capcom being dumbasses mostly.

A real good arcade stick costs about $150 or more (I paid $200 on my TE2+) so this might be interesting as soon as it's hacked, considering the build quality is good.

still don't agree with the price. No costs for a development team since they're using FB Alpha, no extra cost for their games since they own it, hardware won't be that expensive seeing those games can run on real super low end hardware.
Depending on what they've worked out with Fox/Disney, the cost of this product could barely be covering the license for Alien vs Predator.

I really like the look of this, and tbh don't care that they're using FBA, the only thing that makes it less appealling is the low title count... 40 CPS1/2/3 games and I'd consider it more seriosly, 100 games I'd pre-order now.

When you consider that a Hori arcade stick costs $150 and up, that price doesn't seem that bad as you get two 6-button joysticks, enough for most things.
The problem is, I'm guessing they didn't add any sort of functionality to let you use it as a USB (XInput) controller, which would sort of justify the price tag. It wouldn't cost them much to do (lets say $10-15 in parts and labor for the USB XInput interface if they partner up with someone like Hori that already has experience manufacturing XInput controllers and could repurpose one of their existing designs without much trouble) and it would make this a much more attractive offering.
For an additional $10-15 over $200 I think it would be a no brainer.
But when you're limited to such a small selection of games, it kind of seems like a waste to go with real arcade controls. Dedicated fans of Capcom arcade games might be happy, but even they will likely find the list a bit lacking. Being able to use it with any game you want would be a huge deal.

I'm not sure about that design. I guess it was either this or make it a generic rectangular shape like every arcade stick on the market, but this looks like it could dig into your wrists when you play on a tabletop, and it might be a bit too much. I think I would rather have a rectangular shape with some cool designs from the games on it. I mean, egocentric much, Capcom? It's the games we care about, not the brand. Get over yourselves. This looks more like an ad than a product.

Arcade sticks are not cheap. Considering the Hori ones are $150 and up, I'd say the price is not too bad considering the cost of the parts that go into it. It's just that it's hard to justify when you can only use it with 15 ish games. Would be much more worth it if it could work as an XInput controller.

Definitely difficult to justify just for the included games. If it’s hackable and we get to make full use of FBA, then it improves in value - a bit.

But until we get to try the joysticks, we don’t know how good they are. Many companies have claimed arcade quality sticks in the past and been anything but. At least they’re using Sanwa, so there’s a high probability of them being good.

Plus, for £200 I can buy 2 8bitdo N30 Arcade Sticks, actual arcade quality parts to swap out the (actually quite good) stock parts should I want to, a Raspberry Pi 3+, a much nicer case and a good sized memory card.

That would give me far more flexibility, in both the emulation and other functions of a Pi. With 2 seriously good sticks, which thanks to cheap adapters, I can use on my PC/Mac/Android/Switch/Linux/SNES/NES/Mega Drive/N64/Saturn/Neo-Geo/Super Gun/CD32/Amiga/3DO/Atari ST/Atari 8 bit consoles and computers/Commodore 8 bit/Amstrad/Spectrum/NES Classic/SNES Classic/PlayStation Classic/PlayStation 1/PlayStation 2/GameCube/Basically anything with a DB9 connector.

Which is why I went down that road in the first place. I’m not a big fan of all-in-one options. One thing breaks, the whole lot is useless.

Plus, with a large collection of retro systems, the vast majority of which I can use Bluetooth controllers with via adapters of one sort or another, I like versatility.

But that’s a very personal choice of course, we’re all different. Thank jeebus :P

Nonetheless, unless we can get in and hack this bugger. I don’t see me recommending it to anyone. Not when there’s (more than likely) better options out there.

Agreed on all of that. It's too bad, cause if the controls are good this could really make a nice 2 player tabletop arcade stick, if they added that functionality.

Yeah I totally agree, it could have its place. I have a felling it’s going to be pretty straightforward to hack. Honestly, that’s why I think it’s priced as it is. But we’ll see.

I still don’t think I’d buy it. But then I did buy a 1UP Street Fighter 2 Cabinet. Well, I say that. I didn’t buy it, my dad bought it for me. My parents are pretty crazy that way, you’ve got to be careful, if you ever say you like something you’re liable to find it promptly gifted to you

Hell, I’m 44 and my wife’s 34. But every couple of months my mother will insist on giving one of us a few hundred bucks “pocket money”. We’ve tried to stop them, but we’ve given up. If you refuse anything from them it just ends up in a big argument and they won’t speak to you until you give in. What can you do, making us happy makes them happy, they’re very odd

Anyway, the 1UP cab is a teeny, tiny bit different. In that I plan to rip it’s guts out and replace them, so I’ll have a 3/4 sized arcade mame setup. Might as well :D

I know right, who thought using their logo as console design is a good idea?

I’ve seen worse to be honest. Atari Jaguar CD, Genesis 3, Nokia N-Gage, the monstrosity that is my Mega Drive (1), Mega CD (1) and 32X combo and I’ve never been very keen on the Master System 2.

But that’s just me, design is subjective.

Ugly design that clearly had no thought behind it, while missing plenty of games that should be on there. Why SFII Hyper Fighting?? Why not Super SFII Turbo? You know, the one considered the golden standard for competitive SFII, but whatever. I'll just use a PC and my fight stick.

I think your mom is just trying to show in some way that she still cares about you, and it's not like it matters to her since you're gonna inherit it all anyway... And this way you avoid having to pay as much tax on your inheritance.

To be fair she’s had her health troubles, she rarely goes anywhere, doesn’t really have hobbies or do much besides watch TV and knit.

So you’re probably right, I think she’d rather see us enjoying whatever she wants to do for us, rather than wait until she’s gone and miss it all.

You still feel guilty though, I’m not good at receiving gifts. I much prefer to give them, I enjoy that significantly more than receiving something, maybe I’m odd :P But she’s a stubborn one, it’s like arguing with a brick wall :D

For me I liked the design. For that price it's better if capcom includes more games like : Street Fighter 3rd strike, SF Zero 3, Mars Matrix...

If interested, feel free to read about how FBA supposedly has a deal to go commercial with Capcom (actually Koch Media GmbH under license from CAPCOM) and how basically no one believes they can make a deal because they pulled it source from multiple non-commercial projects to make FB Alpha on top of active contributors to FB Alpha. So, yea, I really want to see this burn. :(
