It turns the XCI into an NSP, then installs it.What does it mean to install an XCI though? I've seen the option but not tried it.

The Switch is a portable console. External hard drives break that.

Well the data on the nsp and xci are both the same. SXOS is awesome enough to treat an XCI like an NSP.
But SX OS has better one, because it's not repacking to nsp before installing. The XCI install is not an idea of SX, it is possible from time ago in others CFW with apps like n1dus or zerotwoxci.
+1 on someone else who's tried both nsp and xci and is starting to lean towards xci. The install is faster. You can bundle up updates and dlc into one XCI. Uninstall is faster and cleaner.
But oh noes I have to go into the album app to mount a game. What a killer.
I suspect at some point we'll have a dedicated app on the homescreen rather than have to use an existing app. Maybe at some point we'll also have a way to get NSP's to load over USB HDD but right now I can have my XCI's on an SD card and should I choose to load some off a USB HDD I can. Hands down for me the better option. I still have an open mind about using nsp's if I really need to.
It's a shame blahblah is so far along he can't understand that some people just have a different set of use case needs from him. Sat there counting the number of people are using each file format to keep score. Sounds like a great way to spend your time
Yeah, you are weird and have bad taste. USB HDD on a portable console is dumb. Bundling everything into a non-valid (as per Nintendo spec) XCI is also dumb & is a recipe for disaster with system updates.

Hey it's not my fault you can't afford a licenced hack method that gives you XCI format loading. Run along and play with your NSP files.

Cheers. I'll probably give that a miss for now. XCI seems to give me all I need.

Like your last batch were, the last time you tried to back-seat mod? You have nothing to contribute to XCI users, so please stop posting in here.Your post will be removed by staff

I've never used my switch in portable mode, other than for USB shit with my PC. USB HDD works great for me. Even if you arent a perm dock player, its pretty easy to copy NSP / XCI's to the USB HDD on a PC, then plug it in and install from switch. My USB HDD is purely as a source to install from.
USB HDD as an install source is valid, but isn't really a mainstream use case. Having a random hard drive sitting around that you install from, as opposed to the computer that you downloaded the game to in the first place is...odd.
Admittedly, I am not your average switch user, however I avoid USB installs like the plague because USB install is a meme. I also have multiple switches, and lots of friends who have hacked switches who... borrow my HD occasionally for copying spreadsheets...
Subjective reasoning presented as Objective fact. That's a strike. Try again.not for 'mounting XCIs', that's dumb
The cost of the license is not a factor. Your post will be removed by staff.
Mods can we please clean this thread so there is actual information and not false information about XCI ''installation'' from HDD and biased opinions?
If the cost of a license isnt a factor, whats the issue for SXOS users when they can still do everything that non-SXOS users can do as well?
