I've left mine unplugged in sleep for days, up to almost a week without the battery running out.
Not sure how long were talkin?

edit: If I need to reliably turn it off for an extended amount of time, I can do so in a payloader.

I've heard the battery drain problem from others on this site.
The problem with AutoRCM, I think, is that if you turn your system all the way off, it is easy to accidentally turn it on (the screen won't turn on so it won't be obvious) by bumping the power button. It won't go into sleep, it'll just stay on and drain the battery dead.
Not sure if I guessed right about the cause, but when I had mine in AutoRCM, I turned it off and a week later the battery was dead. This happened to three of my four Switches so I just gave up on AutoRCM.

If you turn it off in the bootloader that's a surefire way. Granted kinda a pain in the butt.

I prefer it set... different strokes for different folks.

Back in my day we called the person who startred the thread "OP" as in original poster. Never seen this TC acronym used before. Kids these days...
Pretty sure other 99% of tempers knew it, where have you lived before? On Mars?

The short terms risk of using a paperclip jig touching the wrong pins and frying your console. The risk of doing is long term is damaging the pins on the JoyCon rails.

If you can get the console into RCM mode first time and enable AutoRCM from there, then you should be fine. But repeatedly using a paperclip will cause damage.

everyone is saying not to use a paperclip, bc it may damage your joy con rail. ive used the same paperclip thousands of times on my switch since april when shofel2 and fusee were announced, never used autorcm, and my joy con rail is just fine (knock on wood). If anyone else has had major short or long term issues from using a paperclip for rcm on their switch then they should post it here, bc ive never heard of complications, just warnings of possible complications

If you absolutely need cfw and you can't wait a few days until the jig arrives, then use the paperclip method. There's a small risk that you may damage the pins, but the risk is small in my opinion as I have personally raped the Joycon port with the paperclip I created and it's working fine. Furthermore there are many people who reported doing the paperclip method without auto-RCM hundreds of times and their console is also fine. Obviously you better install auto-RCM, not even because of the risk damaging the pins, but to avoid the hassle of trying to hit the correct pins every time you turn off your console.

If you can wait, then obviously better safe then sorry, but I doubt anyone would have asked for an easy method if they could wait.

I've personally seen at least two threads from people who damaged their pins, maybe more.

edit: and this new one is a lot worse than some broken pins.

Protip: use a jig.
