Hi I wanna hack my first wii u with the VC game and run haxchi before I start I need to know should I update or stay on 5.5.1.
The guide dosnt seem to explain this prob as not many ppl hacking with 5.5.1.

I need to find out before I start the hack what’s the best firmware for me to do it on and weather I should update?

Maybe someone here will know more than I but I found in hacking my Wii U the browser exploit that I started with was a lot easier to trigger on 5.5.1 than it was after, so I set mine up with the Haxchi on 5.5.1 then upgraded.

Was quite smooth and easy, hope it helps

To be honest I just did the upgrade to be sure, I hadn't got the upgrades blocked as people said there was no more updates coming out and when one was release I just did the update to do it controlled so there was less chance of any surprises. plus no chance of any nagging ^^,

Oh well I used the browser exploit to install the homebrew channel, once I had that I had no use for the browser exploit anymore, from there I install Haxchi, and then finally CBHC.

My reasoning was I had heard the browser exploit became a lot more unstable/unreliable on 5.5.2 which I seen myself, with 5.5.1 I noticed maybe 2 or 3 goes and was in, another Wii U the 5.5.2 exploit could take a lot more tries. So my original thinking was with homebrew channel installed I wouldn't need the browser exploit and I could trigger the homebrew menu ever time by just loading it.

As long as you can install haxchi, then the system firmware doesn't seem to be important, though updates don't do much to make the system worth updating to, so there is that. You are probably safer to install haxchi first before updating. Using the browser exploit on lower firmware has more success rate from what I remember.

Why create a new thread to ask the same question? You already have an active thread here : https://gbatemp.net/posts/8348771 where we told you the differences.

Stop asking yourself questions and be afraid of everything. Stop thinking, and do that :
- update to 5.5.3 ! YES, do it !
- hack your console.
- profit not having headache thanks to updating to 5.5.3 and stop being stressed over something useless.

or you can still wonder what's best over updating or not and ends never hacking your console.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my WiiU is on 5.5.1 with Haxchi already but I haven't touched it since the Switch came out. Is there a specific process I need to follow to upgrade to 5.5.3 or can I just hit the upgrade through system settings like normal? Any new files I need to place on SD card for Haxchi?

Just disable any URL filtering (DNS, proxy, deleted update folder you have to recreate, etc.) and just hit the official update button.

if you have haxchi, updating will have no effect at all on your current hack.

If you have CBHC, and you are on a non european console, it's working fine and you'll have no effect on your current hack either.

If you have CBHC and you are on an european console, the 5.5.3 update replaces the WiiU system menu to add a new option for "GRPD opt out" (or whatever its called in your country). updating the system menu removed the auto-boot information from CBHC.
It does not delete CBHC (the NDS channel replaced with CBHC), it replaces only the autoboot information.
After the update, put CBHC installer back on your SD card and launch the "do not touch me /!\" channel to launch CBHC manually, then select "Homebrew launcher" option from the boot menu. Once in HBL, launch the CBHC installer to re-set the autoboot option.

After the update, you can re-enable your previous URL filtering choice to prevent random future updates.

Thanks Cyan! NA console, so that's easy enough.
