Nintendo renews trademarks for Golden Sun, Rhythm Heaven, and Mario Super Sluggers

SI_GBA_GoldenSun_image1600w.jpg

Nintendo kicks off some wild pre-Direct speculation, by having recently re-established a trademark on four of its properties. This lineup includes Golden Sun, Rhythm Heaven, Wrecking Crew, and Mario Super Sluggers. Though, this is no reason to assume anything major is going on involving these series, as Nintendo renews its trademarks from time to time, the last two times we saw Nintendo trademark something (Mario Party and Luigi's Mansion) we eventually got a new game or entry into that series. In this instance, we see the new trademarks were filed on August 24. Other past trademark renewals from Nintendo include Paper Mario, Wario Land, and Punch Out.

Please don't make another crappy Golden Sun like the one on DS... But I think it's just a way to make sure that no one use their IPs, or they're going to release them in virtual console. Nintendo has been especially protective about their IPs this year.

Golden Sun 1 + 2 remakes in system of the DS one released on Switch together. New Super Slugger game. Renewing Wrecking Crew to keep trademark.

Maybe.

Renewal (an utterly minor cost for a company like this*) is nothing especially notable from where I sit. New subtitles, logos or something for an existing property being trademarked would be. As it stands it is something which gets immediately expensed, and given Nintendo is sort of known for dipping into their past IP then it is in no way, shape or form a hard sell to your investors.

* https://www.jpo.go.jp/tetuzuki_e/ryoukin_e/ryokine.htm says ¥38,800 per classification (about 300 Euros, 350USD or 1400 Brazilian Real), most other countries are fairly similar ( https://www.uspto.gov/trademark/fees-payment-information/trademark-fee-changes , https://www.gov.uk/renew-your-trade-mark https://www.ipaustralia.gov.au/trade-marks/understanding-trade-marks/trade-mark-costs ). It will be for 10 years in each case.

However I am now curious to see what, if anything, Nintendo has allowed to lapse over the years.
Edit.
Had a quick poke around http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield
Surprising amount of game level ones have been allowed to lapse or been cancelled. Many have been things like the vitamin pill merch sort of thing but the game stuff sort of surprises me. Maybe they streamlined it and considered the generic title enough.

I can't wait for the first full HD Rhythm Heaven game. That art style will look gorgeous in high quality.
The highest quality game we have now is Rhythm Heaven Fever at 480p and that uses an older version of the art style (Megamix at 320p looks noticeably better).

I would do almost anything for GS4, such a great series. But this doesn't mean much though. All it means is they might make GS4. At least there's some hope.
