I've installed multiple titles using a certain eShop clone. From my understanding, I may safely update my system version if I update Luma (through the updater installed in 3ds.guide) before doing so. After that, I should not use that certain eShop clone if I wish to keep my system "safe."

I've heard from some sources, I think, that using the certain eShop clone after the update leads to bad things happening, but that any titles installed using the clone BEFORE the system update are perfectly okay. However I didn't exactly understand some of the terminology used in said sources, so that's why I'm here.

Is my information right? Is the procedure I described safe to do from the most recent system version before 11.8?

11.8 has higher chance of getting ban due to the change of the network install manager module in 11.8, you won't be install games through Nintendo CDN via freeshop unless you legally have a purchased ticket meaning that you bought them.

That ... I don't think is what I'm asking. My question, hopefully, can be answered with yes or no.

You can use all your already-pirated stuff, just don't use freeShop, CIAngel, or any other CDN downloader to get new stuff. If they download stuff onto your computer it should be safe to use.

Do not use the sleep mode install feature of Freeshop. It uses NIM which, in 11.8, has a ticket check to verify you own the game. The ticket freeshop installs for the game is not valid, and as such, your console can get flagged and be banned.

The regular install feature in Freeshop does not use NIM, and as such there is no ticket check.

That said, Freeshop will cease to function in a couple weeks anyways, when 11.8 is enforced and you are required to send a valid ticket to CDN to download anything. Start sourcing your games elsewhere.

Any games already installed are safe to use, including online, at this time.

Updating to 11.8 and using freeshop will get you ban.

Only if you use sleep mode downloading.

Which also means you should back up all your freeshop/ciangel downloaded games and/or use villain3ds to grab whatever you may want now as there are alot of things that aren't available from other sources like "that iso site" because freeshop was so easy so nobody bothered to make and distribute a cia of it.

It's not when 11.8 is enforced that freeShop will stop working. It's when the need for the encrypted ticket is enforced that freeShop and other things like it will stop working, and we have no idea when that will happen.

Right now, the need for the encrypted ticket isn't enforced on Nintendo's end, even when using 11.8. That's why freeShop still works on 11.8 and on versions lower than 11.8 for the time being.

When 11.8 is enforced, there will be no legitimate reason for any CDN downloads to not have tickets supplied with their requests. Unless Nintendo just wants to silently flag systems for bans before enforcing anything, they will probably enforce tickets asap.

I don't know what you mean by "when 11.8 is enforced." It's already required to use the eShop normally.

You can still download game updates through the Home Menu without updating to the latest system version. There is usually a grace period of around 2 weeks where Nintendo allows going online on the previous firmware version before you are required to update to latest fw to do so.

When the new 11.8 method for downloading eshop games is enforced. Right now freeshop (as long as you don't use sleep mode), ciangel, villain3ds, and other cdn downloaders emulate the process an 11.7 or earlier system use to download from Ninty's servers which still works even if you can't load the eshop app itself.

When 11.8 is enforced, there will be no legitimate reason for any CDN downloads to not have tickets supplied with their requests. Unless Nintendo just wants to silently flag systems for bans before enforcing anything, they will probably enforce tickets asap.

Most likely it will take a week or two from when the update was pushed as that is how they usually do things. Possibly a little longer so they can verify the new system works without any problems/interruptions/bugs before flipping the switch.

...

Thank you, both! I now know what I think I want to know, basically.

An absolute verification on how 11.8 handles requests to patch games would be useful to many.
