'System Shock' Remake Might Come To Switch

system shock.png

It was known that the kickstarted System Shock remake would be releasing on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, and PS4. However in their most recent Kickstarter update Nightdive Studios, the developers behind the remake, hinted that the game might land on the popular Nintendo Switch console.

When asked during a Q&A session with the Discord community if the game will still be coming to Linux, Mac, PS4, and XBOX One, the developers replied by saying "Absolutely. Nightdive is now an authorized developer for both PlayStation and Xbox and with the refocus on style and scope we will also be able to port the game to another very popular platform".

And what other very popular platform do we know of that has not already been listed?

There has been some progress since the announcement of the hiatus back in February, with the release postponed to an unknown date. Hopefully this gives the developers enough time for a Switch port.

Would you like to see System Shock on the Switch?

have you seen the original game? Some games require a bit more updating.

they can just reamke the entire world graphics just fine and maybe revamp the hud abit, there is no reason for them to be stuck in development hell imo.
I think this is their first attempt as a studio to actually develop a game. Up until now, I think they'd just been buying up the rights to forgotten games to make them available again, so I think the main issue for them is learning to be a game development studio.

Thing is, we're talking about a PC game from the early-mid 90s, they'd have to rewrite the entire game engine from scratch. All the assets would have to be remade from scratch too. The original models and textures are likely in an old, obscure, proprietary, and likely undocumented format. Not to mention re-recording sounds and voices, because the originals are almost certainly compressed to the point where they'd have no business in a modern game.

hmm no they already released a soft remaster on pc called system shock enhanced edition that has more resolution, better textures, widescreen and such they are remaking becuase they tough enhanced edition wasnt enough, so they already know their assets preety damn well sinc they remastered it already.

@pedro702 There is a major distinction between a remaster and a remake.

A remaster is generally touching up the graphics other tweaks using the original engine. Where as a remake is made from the ground up using completely new assets and adding new technical and artistic elements to the base idea of the game.

Some games do get both a remaster and remake ... look at Final Fantasy 7 and Shadow of the Colossus

yeah but like i said its kinda wierd they went into an hyatus becuase they were lost doing a remake... i mean you have the base game its preety hard to get lost direction when remaking new graphic assets and such... they arent reinventing the whell here, they have all directions to follow from.

Game development is far more complicated than following the base outline of an idea. They are in a way having to reinvent System Shock in a way that will appeal to those who have played the original and those who haven't. It's isn't just copying everything from the original making it HD and calling it a day, there are a lot of intricacies involved.

Projects can stall for any number of reasons, disagreements about direction, core staff quitting or even just not feeling that progress is being made.

say that to crash, sahdow of the colossus and upcoming spyro trilogy, people just love the base game and want up to date visuals that is all really.

Your argument is invalid, the gameplay mechanics of all three didn't need to be updated because they still work well today. This is not true with System Shock 1, the game has awfully outdated gameplay mechanics and even with the "Enhanced Edition" still plays like straight garbage. If you ever played System Shock 1 before, you'd know that if the game was released now with the same gameplay mechanics as beforehand, it would be an absolute and utter failure.

This remake is supposed to bring modern mechanics to a game that plays like ass. That's the reason they ended up abandoning their initial development of the game, because they were adding more and more modern mechanics and new features that they ended up making the game a reboot (like Prey 2017) instead of just a general remake. It was no longer promising what their Kickstarter stated they were developing: A simple, modern remake of System Shock.

All of them will have had tweaks and changes and at a base level not the same as the original games, the games follow the core principles to make people feel like they are playing their favorite games but have been tweaked with modern.
Using specific examples was possibly a bad thing to do because all remakes have differing goals to what they want to achieve. Some set out to mimic what people love about the games, such as Crash, Colossus and Spyro, while others want to reimagine and improve upon what people loved about the original.

Games development can be a fantastically deep rabbit hole (been there done that, bought the t-shirt) and it's all too easy to lose sight of what you originally set out to do and 99% you don't see that your original vision is gone until its way too late.

Everyone who has a switch wants it on the switch.

Especially the priveledged ones who wants all games on the switch and dont knew their console has its limitations.

Man, speak for yourself.

The only games I care about for my switch are Nintendo 1st party games or 3rd party exclusives.
