Terrible news. You're the third person I've seen here who has working audio but black/blank screens that only work in Recovery Mode and no where else.

Check the threads here:
Black Screens, Everything works in system update mode, Error when camera disconnected

N3DS XL Black Screen of Death

I haven't found anyone yet who has recovered from this very specific, permanent soft brick.

Post Update
On August 22, 2018, gisel213 solved and provided the solution in fixing this BSoD brick.

Hey mods, if you guys are reading this and start picking up my multiple quick successive posts, I'm not trying to spam the forums. I'm asking these users to gather research.

I have a question about your friend's 3DS when the brick occurred. Does he recall if he was running on sysNAND or emuNAND when it happened?

Was (X) Autoboot EmuNAND selected (meaning emuNAND was used)?
I'm trying to collect information if and when this BSoD brick happens, did it happen on sysNAND making the brick unrecoverable.

Shit. Just as I feared. Thank you for sharing this information.

I'm not sure if this will pave a way finding a fix for this type of BSoD brick like that on your friend's N3DSXL. Other than a new NTRboot install, sysNAND restore, CTRtransfer, and Lazarus3DS, the last possible option is hard mod. This may not work until someone runs into this exact brick, attempts a hard mod, and successfully proves the hard mod method fixing the BSoD.

What we can do at this point is prevent others from possibly experiencing this very evil soft brick.

So far, the proposed countermeasure is for those on custom firmware is to have emuNAND enabled at all times. In case this brick happens, emuNAND takes the blunt of it keeping sysNAND safe.

Edit - I've been informed having (x) Autoboot EmuNAND selected by itself will not having emuNAND running. You need to create emuNAND with 3DS Multi EmuNAND Creator
while having 1 GB free on SD card to do it.

How about creating an emunand and restoring your last sysnand backup to emunand?
