I like the Dreamcast and it´s games like ShenMue 2, Metropolis Street Racer, Power Stone, Headhunter and so on. I would like to ask, if there is any way to use an emulator for Deamcast games or if someone can port nullDC or anything else.

@jimmyj is bang on the money. That said; I read on a forum somewhere about compiling LxDream for PowerMacs? Could be an interesting experiment, though depending on how the video rendering works that might be as far as it gets. We can't really have any sort of hardware acceleration or OpenGL on Wii U at the moment. How much of a problem this is depends on the emulator.

Before this thread derails into dev motivations and the state of the Wii U; I'd like to point out this thread from last year; which should answer any hot takes.

Anyway! I'm not familiar enough with the Dreamcast to give a guess as to the computing requirements to emulate it and how they stack up against the Wii U; so I'll give my usual answer - it's technically possible, just may end up being a lot of hard work that could be better spent elsewhere. I'd be asking for Saturn stuff first.

I've heard you can emulate dreamcast on low end phones using reicast or just use a PC, you can get a controller and hook both up to a TV. This may be impractical for you but it's still an alternative.

Dreamcast bought from Japan paid only 20 euros :)
This! It's a neat, small little machine that's cheap as chips and will always be the best way to play Dreamcast games!
Like Quark says I'd prefer a Saturn emu, which is a f'ugly monstrosity of a machine (with imo a better selection of games too ...just!!)
Neither is looking like it's gonna happen on a Wii U: a pity, but it's understandable! ;)

It would be nice to have one.

I have a Dreamcast here, but my problem is, that I can´t play on TV (my eyes are now too bad :(). I only have fun with devices like 3DS, Wii U GAMEPAD and so on), so a Dreamcastport with Gamepad support would bring me back the good old time.

Perhaps one day... or Sega discovered, that they can make money with these games and bring up the Dreamcast VC on Switch.

I actually think with the circumstances were in right now, it might be fairly possible.

For those who don't know, a Dreamcast POC emulator was actually in development for the Wii. Now, of course, there is no way this emulator would have gotten up to speed due to the Wii's limitations. However, that's where the Wii U comes into play.

Recently, it would found out by @FIX94 that overclocking the vWii side of Wii U to the max clock speed is now possible. This means homebrew made for the Wii like Not64 and WiiSXR can gain drastic improvements in overall performance.

Now, say by the off-chance, the original Dreamcast emu's source code is still in tact and the original dev who worked on the demo releases it. It could easily just be improved upon by existing Wii libraries and built around the the vWii overclock speed.

That is a stretch that the demo of that emulator will be released nearly a decade later, but it is possible most certainly.

the wiiu is only roughtly 50 % stronger than the wii so yeah you will probably get a wooping 15 fps at best :P
Come on now. The WiiU is roughly 3 times more powerful than the Wii. We should give the WiiU the Credit it deserves.

Afaik the only Dreamcast "Gem" I miss is Shenmue 1 & 2. My other favourite games (Sonic Adventures 1 & 2, Jet Set radio) have been re released for new plateforms.

From the guy himself...

WiiU would require big endian support, a video backend for GX2 and a JIT backend for PowerPC. All 3 of them are substantial work. nullDC/reicast had big endian support in the past, and could be plausibly backported, assuming there's time and devs to work on it.

Speed wise, WiiU is close to A15 in perf, so it /could/ play at least some games. Depends on how the other factors affect perf.
