Need Opinions on My Burner

Hey guys!

Anyways, I've come to talk about my burner since it's been acting up recently, and I could use the help of you guys.

I'm using a Lite-On SOHW 1653S and it's been producing alot of bad burns lately. For instance, Nero can't finish a image burn without crapping out in the middle or at the end, because it's been producing disc errors and power calibrations and memory errors. I could only use IMGBurn to burn my Wii games because it has the option to resume. I can't burn Cd's at all, cause they hang in the middle of the process.

So what I want to ask is, is my burner faulty or my media? (I tried it with Sony and Imation DVD's and BenQ Cds) Should this be a sign that my burner should be replaced, and if so, what do you recommend?

PS: I have a family friend who sells computer stuff including drives, so I'm betting I can find some of the better burners without much searching.

Hi,

I had 2 of those Lite On drives. They are good drives but they seem to die quickly. Everything you described happened to me with both drives. Eventually one of them would not even recognise a disk in the drive

I would have to say it is time to replace it .... sorry

EDIT: Recomendation - pretty much anything these days is decent. And there is much price difference. FYI I got a Phillips PBDV1660P1 and it has been great sop far (about 6 months)

It's definitely the drive, since you're using branded recordable media. If you were not using branded media, then that would have been the problem. Unbranded CD-R's and DVD-R's have a thinner writable layer than branded ones (very indiscernible but true) so the unbranded discs wear out much faster.

For a DVD Writer, I recommend the LG H62N. Good price, reasonable lifespan (I have a lower model H42N that's three years old and still writes DVD's at 16x and CD's at 52x). The H62 can do DVD burning at 18x, so it's fast. It supports Dual-Layer DVD and DVD-RAM too.

Sony drives also have excellent performance and good quality, but very pricey by comparison.

Just ensure that your new drive can burn DVD's at 18x, or the new max speed being touted, 20x. Don't get Lightscribe if you don't really need it.

If you haven't changed the firmware on the drive or your PC hardware configuration then it may well just be your burner. There are many factors that can affect the burn though.
The 1653S was not the best burner anyway so maybe it's just as well you try a new one.
I would advise perhaps a newer Pioneer drive like the 111 or 112 series drives. The newer BENQ drives seems pretty good too, can't remember model numbers. One of the new Lite-on drives looks nice too but again I can't recall a model. I think LG drives are still fairly reliable as well.

You do know Sony DVD-RW drives are mostly just re-badged Lite-on models.. don't you?
If not it may be a re-badged Samsung or NEC/Optiarc which Sony have been using to manufacture there drives too.

If you buy a Sony you are picking from a bunch of different manufacturers and the quality of the drives are still questionable compared to others.
And yes you pay more for the Sony brand.

I bet I'm going to go for a Philips or a Sony...ty for the help.
