RUMOR: Final Fantasy XII Remake Coming - Updated

t795222_9aa3c1_ffxii.jpg

Update 2: Arnie Roth made a post on the Distant Worlds Facebook page about two hours ago where he clarifies what he said at the concert. Well, he sort of clarifies. He mentions that after talking with Hitoshi Sakimoto, he realized "the term ‘remake’ was used in error". This still doesn't confirm anything for certain, although those that believed it was likely to be a remaster done in a similar fashion to Final Fantasy X and not a full remake are probably closer than most.

Once again, I'd like to make it clear, he only said a "remake" wasn't coming. Feel free to keep speculating away, and I'll be sure to update if we receive any word of an official remaster.

I will spoiler the original post below. Open it to see the original news about the announcement of a Final Fantasy XII "remake".
According to users on Twitter, at the Distant Worlds concert tonight in Pittsburgh, where they feature Final Fantasy music, the composer, Arnie Roth said that a Final Fantasy XII remake was coming. This was mentioned by multiple users from the concert as shown in several screencaps below.

UPDATE
: I found a video taken at the concert where you can hear Arnie say it. I added it as the main item of interest and spoilered the Tweets from concertgoers.

I can confirm the legitimacy of these screenshots from the FF Network Twitter feed, as linked below. Take this rumor with a grain of salt until there is an official announcement.

Can I get those remakes as PC and Android releases?

My rundown of the games (Spoilers):
I've played, 3*, 4*, 6*, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12. I can honestly say, I like all of them, but the story in 8 wasn't all that great and really felt forced. *= Didn't finish.

I couldn't figure out how to enter the dark world in 3. I walked around for hours and still no idea.

With 4, I just kind of lost interest right before going to the moon. Not sure why.

I'm waiting for a 3D remake for 6. Last time I played it, I couldn't get past the octopus boss.

In 7, I honestly don't know how I beat the last boss the first time. That games was nearly impossible my second time through since I focused on Material levelling, unlike the first time were I winged it. With the whole Aerith thing, I lost my best healer the first time I played the game and never made that mistake again. I only use Terra Protection to get beta at the swamp then I shelf her. I divide my healing tasks now when playing any game. Besides, Aerith is Zacks. Shame on you Cloud!

8, absorb all the magic then sit on it for stats. Screw the card game. Summon GF's like 100 times with minor monsters to get two second summons. Use GF's to turn items into magic casts to save time. Story felt forced, and characters were left undeveloped. Getting all the GF's really isn't worth it for the power gained. I want the Airship.

In 9 I barely beat the game the first time since I blew all my consumables on the first part of the two part battle. The second time I curb stomped that battle. Great card game with rules that almost made sense. Grind an item to learn it's ability right away so I can swap it at a moments notice. Abuse inns if possible while doing this.

With 10, I just overdrive my summons and saved them for the next boss. The story was easy to predict and I was never surprised. The airship mechanic was boring. Used blitzball net trick to get powerful items. NEVER PLAY BLITZBALL EVER AGAIN. Use certain weapon percs to get stupid levels of xp etc.

In 12 I grinded like hell and due to that, the final boss was a joke. The hardest part of the game was the fire elemental on the bridge. There was absolutely no reason to use any character beside Van, Penelope, and the pirate. They don't get unique abilities and using the rabbit as a ranger is terrible since her frame count actually makes her bad at it. Again, the airship mechanic was boring. Zodiac Spear, be careful which chests I open. Most powerful weapons tend to be swords, and a save grind can easily outfit the 3 member team.

It is funny how people say 9 would take a lot of work to be remade. The game was created using the same engine as 10/kingdom hearts. And bravery default uses a very similar graphic style. Either update the textures of 9 and add voice acting or recreate the game using bravery default's game engine.

Okay, FFIX looks nothing like Bravely Default. I can see where you're getting the similarities because Bravely Default looks about on par with a DS game, which tended to look about on par with PS1/N64 games, but Final Fantasy IX seriously looks pretty different. The environments, character models, etc.. I would rather they not butcher FFIX by shoving it into whatever engine they've been using since the days of the DS to make Bravely Default. As for your FFIX uses the same engine as X and KH bit, I literally can not confirm that with any searching I've done. If you have anything that resembles a source for that, it'd be fantastic. Maybe they did use an engine that was capable of going from using pre-rendered backgrounds to full 3D ones without too much trouble, as IX and X did only release a year apart from each other. At the same time, they also could have used a modified version of the engine, maybe even a different engine entirely, which would render your argument basically worthless.

As it stands, like I said, FFIX uses pre-rendered backgrounds. What that means is that, well, they still look god damn beautiful even today. Feasibly, they could just pretty up character and enemy models, as well as other 3D objects and call it a day. At the same time, that is still a lot of the game to churn through a different engine. If they wanted to change the backgrounds from pre-rendered to using 3D environments, that would basically mean remaking the game from the ground up.

Edit: Just as a bonus, I'll add in this neogaf thread where a user shares a lot of the backgrounds used in FFIX before they were converted down to fit the resolution supported by the Playstation. They also show a good display of the graphics which should give a pretty definitive idea of the different art style in general in reference to the first part of my post: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=551612

12 with better graphics, lower load times, better voice acting and some slightly massaged/refined gameplay would be something I am interested in seeing, probably more than other pre 7... and actually 7 through 10 as well of the Final Fantasy series. The GBA stuff, at least once improved with a few choice hacks, does what needs to be done for 1,2,4, 5 and 6 if you feel the need.

I really should go back and play the DS sequel/sidequel/whatever to FF12 for longer this time.

Maybe they will make the story something enjoyable during the remaster/remake phases. Couldn't get past the first 8 hours of this game because of its blah politics-based storyline.

There's a 99.99999999999999999999999999999% chance that it's gonna be a remaster, meaning they won't touch the story (at least to the lengths you're hoping for).

The remake of VII will be on PC, as will the new FFXV. They've just recently ported type-0 hd to PC as well. Any other remakes will probably be on PC too, they've realised it's a massive market.

Geez... can we all stop speculating until Square Enix actually announces the damn game? It might just be something he would like rather than a full blown "they're making one". They're already remaking VII, I don't think they'd do two remakes in a row, and with two such well loved games.
FFXII Remaster Coming - So yeah it's looking like the same kind of treatment FFX got....

Which hopefully means some mods to fix what they break

I updated the first post with the newest available information. Nothing too terribly surprising. Just that, if something is coming, it isn't a remake, which any one of us could have guessed was the case.

It's just a remaster like X/X-2. Updated graphics and music only I suspect.

I look forward to it. XIII has already seen mods since it was released. Everything from fixing the bugs, resolution fixes, UI mods to untasteful nude mods.

Fun Fact: My boss was actually at the concert. He said the building almost fell over when the "remake" was announced. lol

.....but a remaster isn't a remake. It's VERY LIKELY a remaster with updated graphics. A remake is like what VII is, an entirely new engine and remaking the entire game from scratch.

I wish people could get the difference right.

Thats why I put "remake" in quotes. At the actual concert he said "remake" while probably meaning remaster.

The fact is that he said "remake". I'm sure people figured it out after the initial announcement, and it's easy to sit on an internet forum and say "well I would have understood what he actually meant", but if you were there at that moment too, you probably would have freaked out a little too until your knowledge of remasters kicked in.

I think I will just stick to playing the International version via PS2 emulator. I really don't need Vaan in HD. Plus, Square-Enix's last two remaster endeavors were complete jokes. Just focus on new games/IPs already. Rather not have half-baked remasters or unnecessary remakes of mediocre games.

Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy page posted an update on this for those who haven't seen it.

"Dear friends,

In response to comments posted by fans, I want to rectify a statement made from the stage Saturday night at our Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY concert in Pittsburgh.

Following conversations with composer Hitoshi Sakimoto regarding new concert arrangements of music from FINAL FANTASY XII, regrettably, the term ‘remake’ was used in error during one of the announcements that took place from the stage during the concert.

We sincerely regret any confusion this has caused.

Arnie Roth
Producer and Music Director
Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY"

Apparently it was an error. Either they meant VII's remake, or it was just an error on their part.
