No pretty sure my comparison stands. Considering TF got some bad reviews.

My comparison was purely to point out that reviews are inherently opinions, no matter which way you look at it. And to come in and say that a thread title is misleading because these reviews are somehow more than opinion doesn't really help your case.

Regardless of which, my point stands. Opinions may differ, whether it's a player or a reviewer, but at the end of the day that's all they are.

I have yet to see an actual good review for Yoshi's New Island. One or two bad reviews don't say much (gamespot *cough*), but if all major review sites give a game a bad review wouldn't you think there is some merit to it?

In fairness I've seen some 7s and 8s.... Had this one pre-ordered, despite the last video not exactly getting my hopes up I still picked it up.

Graphics are poor, all the character has gone from them (though the same could be said about YIDS there too, to a lesser extent). Music is truly horrific: I can understand the game is cutesy but good God! Game is too easy - like its music, it's catered to 3-6 year olds. On the upside there's some fun platforming to be had in there, but said 'fun platforming' has been done countless times to better results, both recently and in the past. Worst Yoshi platformer for sure, and I'm not just including YIDS, I'm adding Yoshi's Story here too, at least that game tried something new, in a WTF-were-they-thinking kind of way (and I bought that on Jap import for about £65, so not the fondest memory there!)

Eurogamer got the score about right for me: 4/10 - I've played worse games, but there's still no excuse for this.

To sum up: Yoshi's Island trilogy = videogame version of The Matrix trilogy; Magnificent first episode - decent but eventually WTF second episode - basically all-round wank third one! ;)

The game is average according to critics. In fact, the reviews point to slightly above average. I've played the game and i agree. If this wasn't a Nintendo 1st party game and wasn't $40, i reckon the scores would be in the 70's or low 80's.
  1. Positive: 13 out of 48
  2. Mixed: 31 out of 48
  3. Negative: 4

nintendo are getting lazier and lazier it seems all they can do these days is make the exact same game over and over with a new look or different levels. they did it with new super mario bros, link between worlds and now this. they don't seem to be capable of making a new game these days :glare:

When I learned that Nintendo farmed out this game, it all made sense as to why it's so abysmally average in gameplay. It looks gorgeous. I originally hated the SNES look, accepted it on DS and the way the 3DS version polishes it all up, it's wonderful to look at in person (horrible online).

It's just a shame that they were so ridiculously amateur with the gameplay. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't contract out to them again.

to be honest, i sometimes get the feeling that lazy reviewists these days simply copy off of each other. not always, but at times. the first to get the review out puts down the anchor, that several others will take into their consideration. no matter if it actually has merit or not.

You make it sound like YIDS was a bad game, but it really wasn't. I enjoy playing it still.

I agree, I loved Yoshi's Island DS, and feel it was very underrated (despite the fact that it conjured up 8/10 from the likes of IGN and more from other reviews). Frankly I'm seeing less innovation in New Island than I did in DS. I really loved the different babies having different skills from DS, this new one to me looks far less exciting than my playthru of DS was.

Be prepared if you do decide to get a 3/2DS, you can't trade things in at retail outlets.

Uh what?! I traded in a 3DS game to a gamestop the other day, got like $10 for a shitty game I no longer play. Am I misunderstanding what you're saying?

I don't know why they went with the sound of Yoshies being mercilessly slaughtered for the title screen music, I wish they would've gone with something else. :P
But, other than that the game is just what I expected, lots of good old-fashioned platformer fun with pretty graphics and a good soundtrack.

I'm not quite used to it though. It plays like Yoshi's Island, it looks like Yoshi's Island, but when I beat a level the tune at the end is completely different from what I expect :P The fanfare in the original just seems more fitting.

Before it came out people were saying it looked bad (same complaint with ALBW), I disagreed, and now that I've played it I must say they really did a great job at keeping the graphical style while still making the game look a lot better.

Why spend money on this game? Is the gameplay experience really anything significantly different or better than the previous YI games?

not by much it's pretty much identical to the snes version except with a few gimmicks thrown in like gyro controlled vehicles. in fact it's worse than the snes version it's all dumbed down

Well that sounds like an excuse. There are many mixed reviews out there afterall.

I'm not digging the graphics at all. They tried to emulate the look of YI SNES, and I guess that means just overlaying a shitty filter over your textures, but not bothering to do the same thing for the characters or monsters. It looks sloppy and unfinished. The rock textures (the ones you can break) are particularly heinous. They look like something cooked up by a 14 year old for use in RPG Maker.

The game itself is alright. It's basically like an expansion pack for YI SNES.

If you can get over the way it looks, and the repetitive music, it's probably a 7/10 at best.

Seems like all the charm has been sucked out of it. I'll give you an example. When you beat a boss in YI SNES, Mario and Yoshi spin around, he grabs the key, and then gives a peace sign or whatever while appearing to jump out of the screen at you ... it's well done and enjoyable. When you beat a boss in YI 3DS, he just spins around and the key floats down. The end. Why would they not do the same thing when you could actually see it in 3D? It's the little things that make good games great and this game does none of those little things.

Wow! I like my 3DS but Nintendo needs to focus on new and different games and characters if they want to please us gamers. This recycling of old games needs to stop.
