So......Yoshi's New Island turned out to be really good.

This is no YIDS. They actually gave a shit about the whole experience this time. The music is great and not phoned in/boring like the DS game, the controls are really tight (and unlike DKCR3D, you can use the D-pad and circle pad and retain all the same button controls), and overall the game feels like a remake+1 in the same vein as the original NSMB was (same story, familiar feeling tone, but smoother animations). This is a worthy Yoshi's Island game and Nintendo deserves every penny for it. Playing on Gateway but it's a day one buy for me now that I know it's not a repeat of YIDS. One of the few 3DS games that actually makes me feel anxious to play it (I'm a jaded 1984 kid with finicky taste in modern games).

edit: One more thing.....use headphones. The music seems designed around the assumption that the speakers have bass and it sounds really underwhelming through the 3DS's built-ins. The bass is completely lost and the songs feel unfinished without it. The sound design is very good but I can't stress enough how much it requires you use headphones or at least external speakers, unlike some other 3DS games like ALBW which sound good enough through the built-ins.

You make it sound like YIDS was a bad game, but it really wasn't. I enjoy playing it still.

The 3D is very good and really fits the art and animation style, but I still don't use it on account of hating the need to remain so still. I wish Nintendo released a shutter/polarized glasses version of the 3DS so I could relax while using 3D mode.

To each their own, nothing wrong with that. It wasn't a bad game per say, but I don't think it was worthy of Yoshi's Island at all, especially in the music department. The music played a huge part of what made the original YI so great and YIDS completely dropped the ball there. The game was all substance and no style imho, when the original YI had a wonderful blend of both. The level design was good, I'll give it that, but the rest of the game....bleh. It was a chore to finish such an empty/incomplete feeling game, for me at least. YNI feels like a triumphant return to form, to what made Yoshi's Island feel like Yoshi's Island. Same formula of great controls, music, and artistry, while having its own new style.

Really? How many worlds are there? I'm in world 1 and it still has 8 levels per world, same as YI. Are there no longer 8 worlds? The early levels do feel kind of short if that's what you mean, but I was thinking it was only that way to ease new players into the game and that later levels would be longer....

Yikes, only 5 worlds....what's with Nintendo's recent games being criminally short...

They rush them out in order to try to shorten up the dead spots in the release schedules for their systems. It's unfortunate, but otherwise the third party content that is actually worth playing is so few and far in between that Nintendo has to pick up the slack. By picking up the slack, they may still turn out a relatively quality experience, but it will take almost no time to complete with very little overall replay value in most cases. Really, this Yoshi game is just a filler title to tide people over until they can get out a title they've actually spent a fair bit of time on, though, I have absolutely no idea when that might be.

That actually makes a lot of sense. The quality is there, but because they need to keep a steady release schedule to hold peoples' interest for 3DS, they have to shorten development times without reducing quality (leading to shorter games). Hopefully they're not being spread too thin so one of their teams can slow down and make a really meaty game like you say. Maybe behind the scenes they are building up some big games for 3DS/Wii U.......one can dream. They did say they are hard at work on large proper 3D Mario and Zelda games for Wii U but I haven't heard similar claims about any 3DS properties.

Come on, Super Metroid 3DS sequel....(crossing fingers for that).

Is the Egg aiming system like the SNES version or is it auto/lock-on?

Aiming like on SNES, and you have three choices. "Hasty" lets you hold the button and release to throw eggs when you're lined up. "Patient" lets you press the button and then press it again to release (you can still press another button to stop the aiming slider like on SNES). "Gyro" lets you use the gyro sensor to aim with motion controls, same aiming slider as SNES though.

Be prepared if you do decide to get a 3/2DS, you can't trade things in at retail outlets.

Yeah that's the only letdown I guess it's short maybe there are mini games or something like the Original???

If only there was a way to HD'ified the original engine uping the resolution to the Max that would be sweet.......YI did make use of the Super FX Chip on the SNES after all....

Get over what? I'm the one who turned down your offer of a trade.

Sure I've made fun of it, but I think you're misinterpreting things.

From what I know the original YI has 6 worlds.
CJL18: Are you sure there is no last world that is unlocked after you beat those 5? Also, trying to get 100% in Yoshi's Island typically takes forever.
