I've had a WiiKey since those came out. My Wii is the first model, with the very original and super-easy-to-mod DVD drive.

I bought a WiiKey back in like 2008 - pre-soldered to the Wii Clip, since I can't solder to save my life. (I actually had a friend try to solder a WiiKey on HIS drive and broke the thing. That scared me away from the concept)

It worked flawlessly until last year. I could burn 1:1 ISOs and read them, no USB loaders or anything like that needed.

I noticed recently that it isn't working. If I have the WiiClip attached, and I put in a burned disc, the disc just spins and gives the little ? picture indicating it can't read the disc. Sometimes it shows the picture, but when I go to start it I get "An error has occurred" or it just freezes the system.

What makes this worse, though, is that my system also doesn't want to play retail discs with the modchip attached. It does the same thing... either gives me a ? or errors out.

I thought maybe my drive had died (after all, I got 5 years' use out of it), so I bought a replacement drive, which had the exact same problem as my original one. If I take the WiiClip off (this is one benefit to solderless modchips), it reads retail discs perfectly fine with no issues.

Now, my dilemma is that they haven't made the original design WiiKey in years. (As far as I know). Same goes with the WiiClip. Do those modchips ever just die? I didn't think anything of it since I hadn't played a disc on my Wii in quite a while, after I finally dug the system out of storage I noticed it didn't work anymore. Or could there be something else wrong?

I would suspect that the Wii-Clip has failed before the Wiikey. I would try soldering it directly before giving up on it. Soldering an original Wiikey is actually fairly easy, as there is no need to solder directly to tiny IC pins like later modchips. Use a magnifying glass if necessary.

Could also be a software issue if the Wii's IOS files have been updated. Does the Wiikey have the latest firmware?

Yes, the Wii is fully updated, but that shouldn't affect the WiiKey to my knowledge. Yes, the chip itself is fully updated.

I am not going to solder it, trust me, I completely suck at soldering and would break the thing. I'd rather mail the system, chip, and some cash to someone else and have them do it for me. But the nice thing about solderless is that I can get another drive in the future if I need to.

Plus, wouldn't I have to desolder it from the WiiClip?

Well I don't know much about wiikey but latest updates did block the region free part of most modchips so make sure you are trying games from the same region.

Another point is what model is your new drive ? All new models simply can't run backups with or without modchips.

If you aren't sure what model your drive is then you should softmod your wii & try running your backups using neogamma or something similar with the modchip removed.

In case your new drive doesn't support backups then you should look into usb loading. It's extremely simple nowadays & much more efficient.

Yes, all my games are USA region. I ripped them myself using Superdump and burned the ISOs.

The replacement drive is the same as the original. But in fact, I put my original back as the new one also didn't work. Like I said in my initial post, the drive I have is the very original model from 2006.

If that's the case then you are probably right & something is wrong with the modchip or the clip.

Any reason why are you avoiding softmodding you wii ? The process is simple & safe as long you just follow the instructions.

It already is softmodded. But I'm old school and like to have the hard mod too. Easier for me to burn discs than worry about toting a hard drive around.
