I have a normal non smartphone right now and I saw the iPhone 4 from Verizon is free... Can I go and get one without a data plan? What does it do? Just extend my contract? I'm in the middle of a contract right now, can I upgrade cuz it's free or do I have to pay full $449 price?

If you don't want a data plan you will need to pay the full price. Normally if you are still on contract and want a new phone from the company, you will need to pay a fee for terminating the contract early. If you pay the full price for this new phone, you will not need to pay for the termination, because you are not creating a new contract. The free price is only with a contract, which is why the non free version is so much more expensive.

You might be able to find a second-hand good iPhone online at a place like Ebay for cheap. I have an iPhone 4 in mint condition sitting in front of me. So they are definitely available.

I tried that already, they wont activate a smart phone without a data plan, even if you bought the phone yourself or if you bring them a currently unactivated cdma smart phone
also that price is with 2 year activation (which includes a data plan)

Short answer: no. Get the Nexus 4.
Really. The iPhone 4 is old, yet contract-less still costs a lot. I don't feel like going into detail about why the N4 is so amazing, but to put it simply-- one of the very best Android phones, straight from Google, and it comes unlocked for $300.

well so could they switch me over if I bought an iPhone/android online? i hate bringing both my iPod and phone around. I wouldnt ever need data outside of my house, because thats mainly when i use my iPod anyway, but like to play some games and stuff is all I need. I dont need a data plan at all.

I would suggest calling Verizon and telling them you have a phone you want to activate, or visiting your store. Some people can get away with activating a CDMA device that is not on contract. But it is always a good idea to check with them first. It is a lot easier to do this with GSM because you can just swap the SIM cards ordinarily.
