I haven't followed the Wii modding scene at all but I'm probably going to buy a Wii next holiday season as the prices will probably drop even more. I have some questions regarding softmodding:

Can the current version of (PAL) Wii's be softmodded (easily)?
When softmodded, can I get backup copies of any Nintendo system up to Wii to work? Or how does it work with VC stuff?

The reason I'd get a Wii is so I can easily play any game from NES up to Wii on the console so that's why I'd like to know if that's possible.

Thanks in advance!

its easily moddable, unless they spit out a new firmware by then. noone knows whats happening then.
but as for now, with the new mailbomb, you dont even need any game anymore

you can run most old systems, snes and n64 will have a few lagging games (n64 probably more, might also have some grafic problems etc)
also., gamecube games, as far as i'm aware, cant be emulated or played from harddrive

from what i just read (IGN.com), there's gonna be no support for GameCube on the newest ones (for europe).... who knows, they may even affect its modability (new FW?)....

for NGC games on these newer wiis: will DML/Swiss/WODE work? IDK.... none of these offer 100% compatibility either though. ...doesn't matter, no NGC controller ports!

aside fom that: you can get well-refined emulators for NES, SNES, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance (i use all these extensively)....there's one for N64, but it's not 100% from what i've read (i don't use it)...

my suggestion: buy one now before the new one is out, or get one second hand....

Yeah I'm going to buy one when the 'old' one goes on sale because of the new version.

So besides using emulators there's no way you can just for example put some kind of N64 rom on an SD card and play it? Can I just burn GC isos on a dvd and play them like that?

Weird, I thought with the VC Nintendo 64 games wouldn't be a problem.

VC won't be a problem....i was only talking emulators. with VC, you're limited to whatever they release (21 games as of today).

rom on an SD card is how the emulators work...if there was a better way, there wouldn't be emulators!

newer wii's (post October 2009): don't read DVD's....so you're SOL for NGC's on DVD's there....you're limited to Swiss, DML, or WODE for backups; which all leave alot to be desired....

What's SOL? So how do you play GC games then? Putting the iso on an external HDD or a SD card?

Well that's kinda disappointing to hear all this, maybe getting a Wii isn't worth it after all :/

SOL = Shit Outta Luck...

NGC games...as i said: you're limited to Swiss/Wode/DML for backups (which leave a lot to be desired...)
...or you can also buy used copies (gasp!) ...genuine discs play fabulously

...i guess if the primary purpose for getting a wii is to play backup NGC games...then i would say it isn't worth it....(that just sounds silly)....
