Isn't it supposed to be Ninty's strategy that the old DS will continue to provide software from low-budget developers, while the 3DS is new system for the big-budget developers. Of course, it is yet to be seen how many low-budget developers will actually use that strategy.

I say the DS has 1 to maybe 3 years left, depending on that "low-budget" support and 3DS sales. I doubt it will go much further than 2 years though.

As for shovelware, the DS has always had an excessive amount of that, so how will we really notice any difference?

Lolwut..It is a mod of the DS, it uses the same hardware type as the DS, therefore it is a mod of the DS with 3D graphics. DSi was also a mod but with a mic and a webcam and other new shit so u get ur facts straight. Pretty sure the advancement from GBA to DS wasn't called Itouch GBA rofl.

P.S. There are various ways to mod hardware.
-facepalm-
Really dude?
Please get your facts right (and learn how to spell, u and ur aren't words) One the DS always had a mic for starters, so that's nothing exclusive to the DSi, but the 3DS isn't just an upgraded DS. It is a totally different system with backwards compatibility. If your statement held any real research and any real backing, that would imply that any system (PS1 to PS2, Xbox to Xbox 360, Wii to GC, ect) were all just mods of the previous system.

Show me a DS(saying that a 3ds is not a mod of a DS) playing a game that is(graphically wise) that of a PSP.

You're just trolling

The DS won't die completely until someone fully cracks the AP on the 3DS and flash carts start flooding the market

Your not going to convince anyone that because honestly it's a clearly incorrect statement.

Only if you consider an Xbox 360 as a graphics mod of an Xbox, ie, if you're a genuine simpleton.

So you're saying that people are closed minded for listening to both Nintendo AND those who have pulled the 3DS apart and examined its guts and accepting that it is indeed a new system. Whereas you, are open minded in only believing one notion that the 3DS is just another DS update like the DSi was? I think you have your terms mixed up. I assume you look at a PS3 as being a modded PS2?
I think it's about time to move out from under that bridge.
My optical mouse has a photo cell in it, as does my digital camera... does that make my camera an upgrade of my mouse?

Guys, you're all stupid, this is completely true.

The 3DS is just a graphics mod of the DS.

With new hardware.

And new features.

And new games that only work on it.

And a new layout.

Other than that, it's just a graphics mod!

It's somewhat hard to say. On the one hand, the 3DS is pretty much still within the "DS lineup" so to speak. But this is the first DS that actually creates a real line where games are not backwards compatible. The DSi made a 'fuzzy' like with DSi mode but since these carts were DS compatible so it wasn't really a hard break like the 3DS games are. So you could consider the 3DS to be a 'new' model in the traditional sense, where you will have DS games, and 3DS games in separate pools that are not compatible (yes 3DS can run DS games, but consider that more of a 'backwards compatiblity' mode).

I think the DS is still going to be a viable platform for years though. Look at the PS2, there are still games coming out for it for some god forsaken reason. There's no reason why the DS could not follow that model.

Development costs for the 3DS are probably a bit higher than on a DS. So your shovelware devs will probably stick to the lower cost DS for now, while your AAA titles will migrate more to the 3DS platform. Basically don't expect any Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Pokemon game to come out on the DS from here on out. From Nintendo's perspective, the 3DS is the future, not the DS. But the DS will still have 'life' in it, albeit in a more minor way than before.

From what I have read, the 3DS dev kit is a lot cheaper than Nintendos previous dev kits. I expect more shovelware.

Shovelware is an inevitable consequence of a popular system with a wide demographic - see the NES and PS2. It provides quick cash to fund more involved projects and you don't have to play Petz unless you want to. I wouldn't even know about most DS shovelware if my reading of GBATemp didn't give me a running timeline of ever release on the system. The fact that for every Mega Man 2 or Ico there were 20 unplayable garbage games hasn't been a problem, looking back on systems retrospectively. No-one even remembers the crap.

You guys don't get what the 3DS is -.-' Its just another mod of the DS like the DSi. DS games won't die, trust me. Not every ds gamer company is gonna make 3ds games, they're gonna continue making normal ds games. When the DSi came out, there were barely any exclusive games for it compared to the normal ds games.

I agree with that. May be that DS haven't got any BIG release but like Takanato said not all companies have the hability and/or money to make 3DS games. Remember that if anyone want to program (and gain money, of course) for 3DS they have to pay for official SDK.
