I apologize if this post is similar in nature to some others, but I couldn't find information regarding my particular problem.

Here's the story:

I bought "Metroid: Other M" recently and sat down the other day to play it. The game worked normally until I got to a particular spot in the second cut-scene, at which point it froze. This is evidently not an uncommon issue for soft-modded Wii's like mine, but I was surprised that I'd encounter a problem like this for a retail game.
I decided, then, to return my Wii to a "virgin", un-modded, state, with official system files, rather than go through the hassle of checking the results of several convoluted possible fixes. I tried doing this through Nintendo's official update option in the settings menu because according to Wiibrew, this would not erase the Homebrew Channel if I was running the newest version.
The update went through, but booting the Homebrew Channel results in a black screen. Furthermore, Bootmii no longer runs and "Metroid: Other M" still freezes at the same point it did before.
I wasn't quite sure what to do at this point, but decided I needed the Homebrew Channel working regardless of what fix I'll try to implement.
So I try using the Smash Stack exploit to run the HackMii installer, but the loader freezes after the words "Valid ELF image detected" appear on screen. I have no USB devices, Gamecube controllers, or Wiimote extensions plugged in, and I've used many different SD cards with no success.

My question is, how can I get Smash Stack to work, and when it does, what is the best way to return my Wii to a virgin state running System Menu 4.3?

I have a soft modded wii and I played through the whole game using usb loader gx and cios rev19. I think you just ran into a random glitch.

@ramunerobot I'd rather not have to resort to making a back-up of a game I bought and should be able to play using the disc channel. The cut-scene freeze I'm referring to is not a random glitch, but the "Baby's Cry" cut-scene freeze, on which I have read various posts about, even regarding retail discs. The recommended fix, though, is never consistent, and I'd rather just make my Wii's IOS files unmodded and official, so I don't run into a problem like this again.

@neotank19 My disc is brand-new. There are no scratches on it. I've checked.

Thanks for the guide, elbald90. I'll try it as soon as I can get the Homebrew Channel up and running again.
Here's the issue I'm now having: the HackMii installer v0.8 refuses to run via the Smash Stack exploit, but other .elf files load fine (including an older version of the HackMii installer, now void).
I've attempted to run some .elf files that work as loaders for other .elf files, but to no success. The Wii Homebrew Launcher refuses to start, and the Front SD ELF Loader freezes when I try running the HackMii installer. Ever since the Homebrew Channel was made, there have been few alternative homebrew loaders, so I cannot find any others.
Anybody know of a way to run the installer?

a couple thoughts:
if you have any fowarder channels installed (any well modded wii should), you can put the hackmii boot.elf in whatever folder that channel points to and launch via the forwarder....

otherwise, get a different boot.elf as yours may be corrupt....(from modmii or the modify any wii thread)...

you also state you can run older versions of the hackmii installer...if you use the installer for 1.0.7, you won't lose it to the HAXX/JODI removal....

for my curiousity: do you have CORPed IOSes?

No luck. Neither the v.0.7 installer or the v.0.8 installer run with Smash Stack or Loadmii.

I did have ciosCORP wads on my Wii for a while, for convenience, but I got rid of them. I think. See, this is why I want to return my Wii to a completely unmodded state, so I don't have to worry about these kinds of things.

hmm if not a scratched disk maybe there could be something wrong with the disk. I had a brand new animal crossing that was scratch free and would not even load. returned it for another disk and it worked fine.

maybe you could borrow another copy from someone and see if it works or not. if not you know it's your wii. or try your disk on another wii, always good for troubleshooting.

@neotant19 I do think it's my Wii that's at fault, but I will check to see if the disc works on another one. Thanks for the suggestion.

I decided to take a look at my IOS's with DOP-Mii and discovered that quite a few of them are version 65535, which I believe to have come from my use of ciosCORP a few years ago. Is it safe to use DOP-Mii to update these files to the current versions used by System Menu 4.3?
