Hi everyone,

I'm very grateful with everyone who contributed to this guide. It's very comprehensive and useful.
However, I think the title of "Modify ANY Wii 4.3 & below" is kind of inaccurate. tl;dr ahead...

My situation:
A friend just lent me a stored away European white Wii console, for the weekend, so that I would play a bit with a recent game console (my newest console is a Dreamcast). He was kind to tell me that it was unmodified, not modchipped, not softmodded, as the community uses to say: virgin, console.
I got it this evening, and set it up. The version: 2.1E. Really old. Awfully old. No mods, so I can't test any of the games I want to test, neither use some homebrew that I'm psyched to use.
His only game: Wii Sports (as usual).

I then started hunting for information, going there and here, calling some friends who had Wii also. My friends weren't as useful as I would expect, some got a modchip, some got softmod because their IOS versions are compatible with the usual tools.
I read some topic here: I have to run Mario Kart Wii to update it to at least 3.1. But, living in an South American country, it not easy to rent/get a Mario Kart Wii EU disk, I can't even think about Zelda or any others.

Then I arrive here, and lo and behold, the topic actually says that I can use this tutorial in ANY Wii, to at least be able to install Homebrew Channel.
So, I email the account that is announced here, I get the file and download it, unzip it to my SD (note: not HC) and then run to execute the patch, and the Wii gets frozen. Odd.
A note in the topic says "If it freezes or nothing shows up, try another version of bannerbomb". I downloaded every file (from 1a to 50, version 1.08). I replaced the files in the SD, tried to execute the steps, froze again and again. (NOTE: I'm now wondering if I should just download the versions 1.03, 04, 05, 06 and 07 (1.02 is not available, albeit it is shown in the archives listing) also, and try again (tedious work)).

End tl;dr.

Thus, this brings me to this sticky situation: I haven't been able to install BootMii! And there was no special note in this post whatsoever remarking any workarounds for firmware versions lesser than 3.

So, any insights on this case and a relation to this tutorial contents? Do I really have to hunt and crave for an original EU Wii disc (with an update inside)?

Thanks again, and sorry if seem kind of pushy/rude, but I just like to state the facts.

In the begining the guide tells you that you have to update to 4.2 (if your runnig an earlier version)or has instructions on what to do if your at 4.2/4.3 already. That might solve your problem.

Oh yes, the tutorial says that I have to "Update to 4.2", and provides some steps in a Spoiler tag:
I sent an email to the address mentioned, downloaded and unzipped the "up42e.zip" archive to an SD (not HC, which I have).
It also talks about running bannerbomb, by going Settings > Data Management > Channels > SD Card.
Here's where it freezes.
EDIT 1: I did test bannerbomb aad1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e, 1f, 20, 21, 22, 26 and 50, version 1.08. I also tested aad1f version 1.03 and 1.04.

Thus, I followed the steps provided until the Wii froze, and was unable to update to 4.2.
Thus (2), no, it didn't solve my problem.

FYI, I would guess 80% of wii games have above system menu 3.0 or > (I honestly think that is a low ball, the number could be higher or lower). When the guide was written, we ASSumed people have played a game other than wii sports in the last 3 years (that is ~ how long discs have been shipping with SM 3.0+), our apologies for that.

Might as well do an online update then follow the guide, otherwise I would try to get a Twilight Princess copy and use the Twilight Hack.

Either of those options would significantly limit his choice of games... I would rather have well over 600 games to choose from as opposed to 4.

OK newbie here, using a 4.1E softmodded wii, but been having a few problems lately with recent disc backups not playing. Original softmod was done a while ago. Can I just follow the guide and start fresh? My plan was to update to 4.2 via the supplied files, then run bannerbomb and softmod all over again. Will this manual update to 4.2 delete the existing softmod and HBC, and if not once updated can I just re-install softmod according to guide?

You can safely follow this guide even if your already softmodded, so yeah go for it.

I just used this guide on a 4.2 wii and it worked perfectly. My wii is already modded and is on 4.0, can I use the priiloader that comes with this guide on my 4.0 wii or is there a specific version of priiloader that I need to use?

Thanks

You will need to get Lego Indy. IMO, it is fine to stay on 4.3, other people say downgrade, I don't see a need for it any more for 99% of people personally. Yes, follow the same steps, but download the 43mod file.

No, it is meant to stay at 4.2.

Priiloader will install fine, but you will need a different hacks.ini as the one I included is only for 4.2. Just do a quick google and you will find one

Updating to 4.3 will mess some things up. Just use neogamma to play your originals and you will be good to go.

The end result will be the same on all. Just choose which one by whichever game you have easiest access to...

Just modded two wiis today.

First one was a white wii probably around launch since is had 3.2 on it.
It modded just fine the ios236 installer only code dumped one time on me.*no internet connection was setup*

Second wii was a brand new in the box black wii with 4.3 on it.Ran indiana pwns just fine but ios236 installer would not work at all.Code dumped even with having a working internet connection. The few times it didn't code dump it told me i didnt do the process correctly or the ios was not vulnerable anymore.Only way i could get it to work was to use the ios236 V5 installer and it worked instantly the first time without a single issue.

I did the whole wait until the icon stops blinking thing and i waited well past 30 seconds before starting the app and like i said i even had a valid internet connection and the app would still not work for anything.

Very frustrating.
