If you just go ahead and softmod update to 4.2 then you will be able to play region free by using priiloader. I would reccomend updating, being that there is a fabulous guide at the top of the forum for updating ANY wii to 4.2. You really can't go wrong, and I would guarantee that your smbg2 disk will work fine after that.

as in, don't update from the SMG2 disc or wi-fi?

ok so are you modded in any way whatsoever? If you are then DO NOT update using the official wii update or from the disk. if you are not then you should still follow the same guide anyways.

Why not? If he's hardmodded then it will just kill regionfree.

because if he updates using the guide, he will be able to use priiloader to go region free. and update all of his out of date files in the process that are crucial to running the games he wants.

From my point of view, and this is just my opinion, I feel like you would be much better off going through with the softmod update. everything coming out is for people who are softmodded and seeing how you don't really know how to go about installing homebrew and whatnot, I think it would be in your best interest to go ahead and go softmod. Its just easier to deal with once you get it done right.

alright man. you'll be fine. I'm about to go grab some food and then I'll be back on to answer any questions you have about the guide. While I'm new to this as well, I did it yesterday and had great success. I'm sure everyone else here will be glad to assist you with the guide. as I said before, just load the contents of update.zip onto your sd card and then begin to follow his steps. It becomes pretty easy once you start doing it.

@Rajahten,

i have a wiikey 1, i softmodded a long time ago also, back when using the twilight hack, and have continued to softmod a few times since then for homebrew, usb loaders etc.

Follow the guide linked above on gbatemp and you'll be up to date 4.2, and with a backed up nand, priiloader, homebrew channel in no time and it'll open up a lot more potential for your wii than just the crappy ass wiikey, and its easy to do.

You got two choices in guides imo, the above one on gbatemp, which is a point to point guide, easy to follow and you get it done in no time at all. OR, the other completesoftmod guide which is more detailed and explains what you're actually doing more, but requires more reading, although is great if you have no idea and want more idea on what it all does.

gbatemp quick and easy guide
gbatemp quick and easy guide to 4.2

complete softmod guide
more detailed softmod guide in case you want a bit more knowledge

Both will get you to 4.2 and with the required cIOS files installed on your system to play galaxy 2 no worries, as well as use Neogamma, or even usb loaders if you wanna go down that path.

I sorta have the same issue. I am on firmware 4.0U soft modded also with a d2pro mod chip. I can play the game just find through the backup launcher, but when I try playing the game through the disc channel I get an error message saying "Cannot read disc, please eject disc and restart the wii" I have already updated the IOS53 which I had been told would fix the issue but it did not..do you think by installing
IOS56-64-v5405.wad
it will finally solve this problem? Thanks

exactly. and you are def going to want neogamma r8 final after completing the update. I'm watching it load my smg2 back-up right now.

Alright. I will likely go at this tomorrow as I am tired right now.

I'll check back tomorrow and hopefully my questions will be answered!

Question #1. I have a 2GB MicroSD card laying around, with a MicroSD adapter. Will this work? It looks like an SD card and the microSD goes into it (well, when i googled SD card at least) or is there a specific brand I should go out and buy? I don't understand the difference between an SD and SDHC card, other than HC means high capacity. All I know is the guide says to get one that's not HC.

Question #2. Can I use a USB stick for all of this? or does it have to be SD?

Question #3. I want to be sure about this part -

Update to 4.2
Run Yet Another WAD Manager Mod from The Homebrew Channel.
Scroll down the list to find & install:
*Really important stuff here! Do not skip or alter steps in any way!*
IOS70-64-v6687.wad & System Menu-NUS-v481.wad [NTSC-J = v480; PAL = v482]
Then proceed to install the remaining 22 different IOS files & Shopping Channel-NUS-v18.wad by pressing + on each one then A to install them. It should say 23 files will be installed.

do I install IOS70-64-v6687.wad & System Menu-NUS-v481.wad (assuming this is the NTSC-US version) and THEN install the other 22 files? or can I have them all installed at the same time? Are there any other IOS files in that list that can brick me?

That's it for now. Appreciate any answers =)

1. Yes you can.
2. No, the Wii looks on an SD card for half of the guide.
3. That is how it's supposed to be done. Install those two individually, and then install the rest together (that means you actually install IOS70, then System Menu v481, and then you can install everything else at once.)
