NOT TALKING ABOUT 3DS2 I'M TALKING ABOUT OFFICIAL GAMECUBE EMULATION

From the launch of the Gamecube, the mini-CDs of the Gamecube always made me wonder if Nintendo were considering/planning the possibility of releasing a portable console that could run Gamecube games. The CDs aren't much larger than a UMD, so for a slightly larger than PSP sized DS, it'd seem perfect.

I haven't held a DSi XL, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a perfect match.

And then with the 3DS leak, it sparked a connection. That old news about how the Gamecube was released with 3D capabilities designed, but never released. But were the games coded to be in 3D (similar to how Gameboy games were designed in Color), or did the console itself just have the capabilities?

If the games were coded to be in 3D (potentially), even some, a 3DS Successor with Gamecube backwards compatability is a match made in heaven, as it would finally be able to use that 3D ability.

If not coded in 3D, the disks themselves are small enough that it's not too farfetched. The only real issue is lack of a CD-drive, but who knows what an official emulator could do on the next-next-gen hardware.

When I first saw the title of this topic I thought you had some sort of inside scoop on Gamecube games running on the 3DS

I'm not asking if it will happen. I'm asking if you think there's potential for a portable gamecube, given the size of the disks. The 3D-aspect of the 3DS correlating with the 3D feature of the gamecube is just a connection.

Your asking about the successor to a console we haven't even seen yet. Just no. Theres so many reasons as to why Nintendo would ever use that idea. Sure it seems cool but never gonna happen. Just let it go.

apart from the obvious fact thaat you're talking about an unreleased console's SUCCESSOR, nintendo wouldnt do such a thing because they dont have anything to gain from it. theyd either need to mass produce old games (zero chance of that happening), or make a virtual console store (thats a possibility), in which case, would not have gamecube games given the fact that even the wii doesn't have them. theoretically, i think that yes, you could have a reasonably portable handheld that plays gamecube games. however, factoring in all native 3ds functions into the same system, your really pushing it there in terms of portability. if your wanted something emulated, i can guarantee it wont be powerful enough (old general rule of thumb is that the system must be 7-10 times more powerful than the system its trying to emulate).

In all honesty, I wish Nintendo would include Gamecube emulation in a system, but the odds of that happening are the odds of winning the lottery. I bet the best thing they're going to do with this system would be to make ports of like one or two games, those being Super Mario Sunshine and MAYBE Pokemon Colloseum, but even that is a huge stretch...

Aside from the not-talking-about-3DS2 thing, don't forget I said official emulator. They would work much better than any homebrewer's due to optimization, so I assume it would take less power.

The N64 is much different than the PS1, but from launch (tmk) the PSP has been able to almost perfectly emulate PS1 games. In about 5-6 years the farthest we've gotten is a handful of playable N64 games with sound. The difference can really make/break it.

That's because both PSP and PS1 use the MIPS processor and Sony actually bother making a hypervisor for it (or was it a hypervisor?). If Nintendo do go the Wii way and release GCN along with a Emulator (You know that Virtual Console shitz

) then we can prolly just swap the rom image and have a functioning emulator playing a rom.

If they were to incorporate some kind of Game Cube emulation in the system, they could nearly emulate a Wii as the hardware specs share similarities. Homebrew possibilities would be something else if this is true.

It's not the size of the disc, it's the processing power. We don't know how powerful the 3DS is, it could be improved to be just a little bit more powerful than the PSP, I highly doubt the 3DS will be able to play Gamecube games.

Won't happen, especially on 3DS2 (come on wait for the first to be released!) seeing that by the time that will be released (if it actually does) the GC would be considered too old, just like the N64 is to the Wii.

Why do free emulation when they can charge full price for the actual titles? The only reason the Wii is backwards compatible with GC titles is to expand the back catalogue, same with 3DS being compatible with DS and how the DS was compatible with GBA games. 3DS2 would be compatible with 3DS titles and thats it, so far it has always been about the console before ever since the GBC days.

Also if rumours are to be believed the 3DS is supposed to have graphical capabilities of the Gamecube so surely Nintendo would perhaps do a "New Play Control" style series on 3DS first IF they ever do seeing the Wii series didn't do as well.

As for the disc size of the GC games, it was purely because Nintendo wanted games to load quicker as their fanbase was used to cartridge speeds, that is all. After the PSP UMD format practically bombed I doubt Nintendo would follow suit especially with cartridges being able to hold enough data nowadays.

No way. Gamecube emulation would be nice, but would be impossible for mobile hardware. The darn thing barely works on my PC, and i can run Crysis at Very High 1680x1050 with 23-57fps average
