I'm giving away my Dell Inspiron 1520 to my mom, who is technologically inept. I am too... sort of. I hardly ever used my 1520 because it was so large and bulky. Since I still have a desktop, I am thinking of getting a smaller laptop, since I would probably use it more. I looked at the potential 10 inch netbooks, and realized they were too small for my taste. The 12 inch ones seem like a good balance of being really portable, yet still usable daily at home. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be that many choices for 12 inch netbooks. I've looked around several sites and I'm not trying to spend over $400... or not by much anyways... but here's the one I am thinking of.

I realize there are the Ion and dual core ones, but they are about $100 more. I'll probably be mostly using this netbook for internet, probably no gaming, or very light gaming. Just wondering if there was a better deal for 12 inch netbooks in this price range. Battery power isn't tooo important since I won't be taking it outside the home often, but it would be nice.

At that price, why not not put out a few extra dollars and opt out for a small laptop with a kick?

An extra $150 might get you a laptop thats maybe 3-5 more capable.
But this is just opinion to me.
I take multitasking as kind of a big deal.

Often in the computer and gadget world, paying alittle extra can wield twice as much benefits. At best Buy, a Western Digital 160 GB hard drive is $55, however for $5 more you can get the same model with twice the storage. Thats just an example to the comparison between Netbook and Laptop.

Besides, did you take a closer look at your ASUS? The specs it said it does not come with a Pre-loaded Operating system (Only Express gate which is only a REALLY basic Linux-type-Internet based program). That means no Windows, no Mac, not even Linux. Your OS has to be booted from an external source which in itself has its own complications (Plus the customer reviews said you can't boot Win7 by card, and the system chokes up when streaming 480p or greater resolution video, which means you're stuck watching low quality flash videos) . Though if you're tech smart there are many number of ways to get an OS on there, however it might be a huge problem with you. And that particular netbook does not appear to have a DVD/CD drive. That CD drive is essential for computer dumbies to install an OS. Without one all you have is a pretty brick. From the looks of that Netbook, you'll be spending $400 on the netbook itself, then another $50 for an external DVD drive, and then another $150-$200 for an operating system. And in the end you'll have spent $600+ on a machine with a quarter of the multitasking power of a Laptop.

However you could save money in DVD reader and OS costs by learning how to pirate Win7 successfully and learn a bit more to get the software to run without the need for a DVD reader.

WHAAAAAT?

One version of windows is just like the other give or take a few features!

Also you want it because its built tough and shit.
I mean c'mon its a THINKPAD FFS!

The only tougher computers are Panasonic Toughbooks's but they are HUGE!

Absolutely not. I often find myself having to use older version of Windows to help out some people.
The older version of windows, the more system errors you get. Newer versions are often more stable.

Windows 7 is miles above XP because it gets less errors.
And Window's 7 Aero actually serves a function unlike Vista's Aero which was just eye candy.
Yes Windows "feels" the same because Microsoft is deliberately trying to give users sense of familiarity.
Not to mention there were tons of feature changes, updates, and additions. But I don't want to get into that discussion because I'm sure someone will start saying how much superior they think Linux is or something.

As for your think-pad, its tough only if it has a standard state drive. If your think-pad has a regular hard drive in it, then it wouldn't survive a 3 foot drop. The moving parts in a hard drive are so delicate that the slightest shocks destroy them. But it's multi-touch track pad and face recognition login features are neat.

Most netbooks don't come with a CD/DVD drive, and I am okay with that. I pretty much NEVER use the one I have on my desktop anyways. I am aware that the ASUS netbook doesn't come with an OS, but thats okay, since I have a USB drive with Win 7 on it that I've used on a friend's netbook before.

And the size... thats JUST the thing. For around $400-500, I can buy a regular laptop. A 14-16 inch one, probably better specs, and a better deal. But I WANT a smaller laptop/netbook... I have a desktop that does everything that I need it to do, mostly gaming. Actually, these days, it seems all I do on here is use the internet... which is why I would like a netbook, because thats all I really intend to do on it. Surf the web... listen to music... probably won't be watching any videos or anything, so I don't care about that. With a small laptop, I would probably move it around the house a lot. The reason I never use my current laptop, is because its a large, bulky, and heavy 15 inch laptop and I'd rather just hop on my desktop if I need to do anything.

I hate to say this because I hate Apple, but have you thought about an iPad? Its light, its portable, its a tool of the internet, and has a decent screen.

But if you already have it all figured out with/without an OS then just get that Asus you want. I'm a bad person to consult n this decision because I cannot fathom why one would pay more for an inferior machine. Netbooks aren't that much more portable than a laptop. A 12 inch netbook is less than a pound lighter than a 13 inch full laptop.

If you decide for with that Asus, then good luck filling that 250GB drive. Atleast with it's Express Gate you can go from power off to email in 10 seconds.

I don't really want an iPad. Seems overpriced, and I would rather have something thats setup more like a notebook. And I hate Apple as well

But anyways, I ended up buying that 12.1" ASUS 1201T. Now just waiting for the shipping.

Oh, trust me, I won't be buying another Dell. Not saying my Inspiron 1520 was a terrible computer, I didn't h ave any problems with it, but it wasn't the greatest either. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my ASUS netbook. But as far as Newegg's 3 day shipping goes... grr... placed the order Weds night. I thought UPS always delivered on Saturdays? The tracking info says my netbook is already in my city, but it's not moving. Estimated delivery date is Monday... today (Saturday) would have been the 3rd day if they delivered on Sat. I guess I can still hope the status changes to "Out for delivery". It's still early!!

ups never delivers on sat or sunday (shipping days are counted as mon-fri unless holidays), so it should arrive monday (hopefully, since you ordered on wed night, that doesnt count as a day, so it could arrive on tuesday as well)
