What about SD-Boot? You can potentially get 2 games on one 2gb SD card after being trimmed with GCMtool, and SD geckos can be got from Dealextreme for about three dollars

I know of a way that you can boot a GC game from an SD card, it would require software/hardware that is $19.99, but it's cheaper than that jukebox thing. I'm testing the method as soon as the package arrives.

This:

and this:

Does not work with the Wii for booting backup GC Games.

The ISOs are not stored on the SD card, if that is what you are thinking.

If you can prove me wrong, I will be happy.

P.S.

Well that sucks, I thought for sure it would work. So why doesn't someone make a program where it loads gamecube games from an SD card through the memory card slot? When the wii goes into gamecube mode, it doesn't shut down the memory card, so it's perfect!

EDIT: Found this: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/720613

Might work? Since you don't have to switch CDs, right?

This is simply speculation but It should be possible to enable USB support in MIOS. We are able to create a custom MIOS now we just need to actually add the USB module and disable the check that cut's off the hardware access in MIOS....... It won't be easy but I believe it's possible. We have all the code needed for the USB 2.0 module..... We just need to adapt it to the MIOS and enable access to the port.......

Edit...... This may not be possible without creating both a custom BC and MIOS....... BC will first set the systems hollywood speed to 162MHz. after that it loads boot2 which eventually loads MIOS and executes the game. If the BC is responsible for disabling the systems extra hardware then we will have to create a custom BC to load boot2 without the disabled or changed hardware access... However if it's related to boot 2 we would require a custom boot 2 to enable this which is not possible on all systems.... Can anyone give a complete analysis of exactly what BC does?

SD-Boot seems to work with Wii. (Perhaps works best with v4 of MIOS / earliest version unpatched / or custom)

Compatibility List: http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/SD-Boot_compatibility_list

It does, but that's if you can get the Wii GC Homebrew Launcher to run. I can't get it to load start.dol. I got SDload to run by using a custom ISO, so I'll try to use that, but for the OP the more viable option WOULD be to use the SD media launcher in conjunction with SDBoot and the GC Backup Launcher

why do we need the GC backup launcher? what does it do? you put it on your SD card?
Nintendo blocked the SD Media Launcher from loading through the System Menu, so you need a loader to boot it. The Gamecube Backup Loader for Wii fits the description. Just buy the SD Media Launcher and use the Gamecube Backup Launcher to boot the disc.

Anyone know why technically the D3-2 wont boot backup disks?

All I hear is that it wont read it but no one explained why.

I read this too, but i didn't understand why a drive use two different commands for the same function?

If we assume it's correct it should be possible to use another cIOS with the new commands.

But the commands allowing it to read recordable discs without the encryption found on retail discs are gone. We can't get them back via a software hack because they were stored on the drive chipset

I think they removed the dvd commands cause the drive was used for other electronics(integrated tv dvd player) or something
Hmmm ...
And how does the disc-channel read a dvd?
Without an command?

My theorie:
The new D3-2 chipset detect a burned dvd and stop workingm - or - it detect an original dvd and if not, it stop working.

Edit:
I was again to slow.
But tattar8 write is what i mean.
There is no new command, the drive itself detect a burned dvd or better, it looks for something that we can't burn on a dvd.

cause original wii disks aren't dvd format there nintendo's own format as they didn't want to have to pay sony for the dvd standard(as sony invented the dvd format and own copyright)

the original drives contained a debugging command set that was used for just that.... The newest drive has this removed from it. We were able to exploit the drive's debugging commands to allow us to boot a disc without the retail signing from nintendo. With the exploited commands removed from the drive firmware we are unable to use them to load backups...... We can still use a USB loading system however this will not work for a Gamecube solution..... It is possible that the firmware of the drive could be modified with an appropriate hack similar to the one used to flash the Xbox drives However I doubt it will do much good.

Like we said, try Gamecube backup launcher + launch SD media launcher with it + use SD boot to boot gamecube game from SD

thats the best we can do now without buying $90 hardware. its not the best because of the compatibility, but its something, mario kart double dash ftw (MKW really does suck, its the same old, same old, BRING IN STORY MODE ALREADY!!!!)
