Only took 15 mins, and I would have waisted that time doing nothing anyways. And I learnt a new word (??) so time well spent

If anyone wants to know, I'm translating the monster names right now. donelwero is working on the skills, last I heard.
I don't mind, it's just a hobby anyways xD. btw Neoxephon, if you don't mind can you give me pointers/where I should start with the rom hacking? I can do my own translations if I know how that way.

You want to learn about Hexadecimals first, or Hex. Computers don't read letters, they read numbers. For example, if I wanted to use a capital A in DQIX, I would use the hex 82 60. I started off with the well known tutorials at:
http://www.romhacking.net/start

A lot of the information, although outdated, is still accurate.

Read through the documents on there. Then, get a rom of some game and crack it open and mess around. I just started to hack roms a week ago on DQIX. Everything I know how to do now I learned by doing this project.

Here are some programs I recommend:

MadEdit (great Hex editor that comes with Shift_JIS, so you can view Japanese without having to make a Table)
CrystalTile2 (great for editing tiles, but really buggy, it likes to crash a lot)
Tile Layer Pro (I use this for a lot of the tiles in DQIX, where other tile editing programs couldn't)
Nitro Explorer 2 (use this to extract and insert files into a ROM very easily)
NARC Explorer 2 (sometimes files will be stored in a NARC. These are essentially the .zip for the DS. This lets you extract and insert files into the NARCs.)

Oh and try to find a game that has mostly uncompressed text to start off. You'll know its uncompressed because you can just open the file in the Hex editor and edit the text.

Phew, 48 monster names done. A crap load more to go.

EDIT
I've lost interest in continuing on with translating stuff in this game, since I'm 99% positive that if SE was bothered to bring the DQ4-5 DS remakes to America, they will bring DQIX.

I will talk with donelwero and see where he stands. If he feels the same way, I will see about him putting together a new patch with all that we've done since the old patch.

Sorry to hear that neoxephon but thanks for all the work you've done so far!

Its mostly because I'm looking at translating another JRPG that has next to 0% chance of localization.

Anyways, I contacted donelwero to see what his plans are.

You're still planning to release what you have done though yes? A skill translations patch would be a big help since its probably the thing you look at the most in game. If everything else was in Japanese it wouldn't matter really.

Yes, we will be releasing a patch with everything we have done. donelwero has said that tonight he will try (note try) to get the skills done. Either way we will be releasing a patch with all our work.

Him and I have decided to team up for this new project I had mentioned. It will be a big one and I am sure a lot of people will like the game choice. We will not be officially announcing the name of the game until we have some stuff to show.

Looking forward to this reveal! Thanks for the work on DQIX.

Nope. We were talking about this one. It will take a lot of time, pain and tears. But I know Neoxephon and I will do it....
This is OUR NEXT BIG PROJECT! It's a joke, please don't click on the link.

Here's the latest and last patch. I did translate all skill-tables. In figth they will be in japanese still. Sorry but it's just too much work for a game that will be released. If SE decides not to release the game outside Japan we will continue where we left off. Now I'll be working with Neoxephon. Thanks to all those who supported us with just a "thank you", translation links or to all those who translated something for us. Thanks to you all guys!

DQ9 Last Patch

Hope you understand and please enjoy!

Magic, skills, the character creation menu. Now you can give him/her an understandable name. And Sandy's menu too. Those last two were done by Neoxephon.

And that's what I remember now. Hope you like it.

I know this is asking a lot from a forum newbie, but for some reason I picked this game to "get my feet wet" so to speak, so if you could maybe PM me with a few tips on where you found the tables for monster names etc. or maybe a simple tutorial as to how you translated "dracky" in the battle screen, I would be most appreciative.

I figure that if I can see an example of even one change, I can use that as a basis to continue playing with it, and learn something along the way. I literally have nothing but time on my hands, and really would like to become proficient in DS hacking/translation (mostly the latter) even if it's just a learning exercise, as if I actually manage to get anywhere I will have to come back and look up how to even make a patch.

If you don't feel up to it that is totally cool, just a finger pointing in the right direction would be much appreciated.

And thank you for what you have done so far.

Thank you so much! I don't know what gamers would do without people like you guys.

And I look forward to Tales of Hearts, also.
