Hacking Seek Recommendations on DVD+R or DVD-R for Burning Wii Images

Hi,

I have been using Memorex DVD+R (4.7GB) for burning Wii ISO images. And lately some game discs (Wii Fit NTSC, Mario Kart NTSC, Big Brain) can't be read by my Wii JAP 3.2J (D2C Mod) or after playing for a few minutes, it prompted that the disc can't be read. I am wondering if this has to do with the media (Memorex DVD+R)...what are the most reliable media that are recommended and used commonly? Thanks a lot...

ive always used Sony DVD-R only ever had 1 bad burn

Taiyo Yuden is highly regarded as the best when it comes to backing up games on any system.

I personally have hundreds of backups and not a coaster yet.

Also, they are about $30 for a hundred so not a bad price.

I also recommend Taiyo Yuden's DVDs. There a little expensive, but well worth it.

Ritek is probably the most widely available at a reasonable price.

As far as the whole -/+R debate, +R is a Sony backed standard that is supposed to be better for photo DVDs. It also comes with slightly better error checking.

However, in all of my years of writing DVDs, I have yet to develop a preference. They're about the same, except for the fact that older DVD players don't support +R.

Definitely grab Taiyo Yudens. One of the best media brands on the market. Try and get the TY03 (16x) as I've been using them with a Pioneer 115D and getting 97-99% Disc Quality scans.

As great as Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims have been for me, you have to factor in as well what's good for your burner. I used TYs & Verbatims with my old burner and it either didnt like them or I would get occasional discs that gave me DREs. I got my self a Samsung burner and its burnt everything I have thrown at it perfectly! Even the crappier Verbatims from India. Not one coaster.

make sure theres no firmware updates for your dvd burner, i had ridata dvd+rs which worked perfectly, got a new drive and got a bunch of coasters, updated the firmware and its been 100% since.

I also had some problems with memorex dvds.

Thanks a lot...

I burned most my Memorex DVD+Rs fine but after playing for some time on Wii, I often get error messages "disc can't be read"....have you guys experienced this???

This means:

A) Disc is scratched.
B) Your laser is already worning out
C) Whathever else...
D) Disc is poor quality.
E) Disc is bad burned.

I use IMGBURN set at 4x with Memorex +R's, and get a 98% quality rating with DVDInfoPro!

Got 100 of these bad boys at a BestBuy sale, for about $20... couldn't beat it, and now I know they are great for my Wii!

Solid-ish advice.

It depends a bit which factory the discs are coming from (Country on package will give you a good idea.... Japan-Premium, Malaysia-Usually OK, India-Usually poor).

Also depends a bit on your wii drive... some will like some dyes better than others.

Also depends a lot on the burn drive / firmware... different write strategies make a huge difference. Remember that the manufacturers are split in to - and + camps... so it's natural that some burners perform better with + and others better with -... generally. If you have the option - leave WOPC on. Overall, I recommend NEC chipset based burners (ie NEC / Pioneer) with latest firmware, burned at rated speed. This will give you consistently solid results.

"Burn Quality" is a bit of a wank... very few drives can accurately report PI/PO data these days. You really need a BenQ, Plextor or maybe a Liteon or Samsung...

Find a combination that works for you, and stick to it.

Not sure if DVD+R or DVD-R matters in this case. I just burned Mario Kart on a RiDATA DVD-R. It can't be read. I used Memorex DVD+R to burn the same iso and it didn't have this problem...maybe some scratches made it unreadable after playing a while. I am planning to order some TYs but need to make sure if DVD-R or DVD+R plays a role here...thanks...

More likely to be UV degradation than scratches. If you use poor media, or a poor write strategy... you'll have a poor signal to noise ratio. Discs degrade when exposed to UV, so if the SNR is already low, it doesn't take much to tip it over the edge.

Weirdly, I've found my wii likes CMC MAG AM3 more than TYG03.... it'll read both, but the TY discs make it clunk a lot more.

Taiyo Yuden is actually Verbatim so you guys know. The discs are a little bit more quality than Verbatims discs and should give you the best of the best.

Myself use Verbatim since I don't care so much if the discs goes bad. I just through them away and make a new copy.
