Take-Two forces end to homebrew GTA V Switch port project

The in-progress Switch port of the 2013 Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto V has been forced to end progress after Take-Two Interactive has threatened legal action against its creator(s).

The homebrew project which used the leaked source code of GTA V was still in early stages, but was making good progress; running natively on Switch. With performance at around 10–25 frames per second on standard hardware and up to 30 fps on overclocked units.

The project's lead developer, known as M0jso, announced on September 28 that the group would stop work by October 3rd. He said he was "thankful for Take-Two's mercy" and admitted the team would had zero chance of winning in court.

It's unclear why there was never any official Switch version, since the console is roughly on par with the PS3 and Xbox 360, where GTA V first released. Was it a business decision, a technical one or simply not a fit for the usual Nintendo audience? What do you think?

Also is this the true end of a fully playable GTA V experience on the Switch or do you think others will now step up to tackle the unfinished project?

I have my disagreements with how Grand Theft Auto 6 is being handled, but that doesn't make using leaked source code right on the homebrew developer's part. I'm sure there's going to be a lot more people in defense of the homebrew developer, but two wrongs don't make a right. We are supposed to be bigger and better than the wicked corporations, not just as stupid as they are with poor decisions and actions. Desperation and stealing aren't the answers to the problem.

It was a stupid idea, but you phrase it like it was immoral.

Technically, it is immoral.
In general, for what the port was, I didn't see a morality issue, personally. More of a legal distinction than anything. A cleanroom unofficial port is legal, whereas a port based on leaked code (even if the code was leaked by someone else in the past) is much less so, especially if it's obvious from the start.

However, the way it was distributed had the compiled game binary included as well as lazily put together patch archives probably due to incompetence, but they did at least try to pass the burden of game files to the user, even if that ultimately wasn't accomplished. In the end though, pretty much all legal issues they brought to themselves, and handled it as if there was no outside risk of any kind. So many avoidable blunders which you could argue are immoral (or plain incompetence), if you wish to.

Also, I know this reads as if I wish the worst upon the team, but that isn't true. I think the project was a great achievement in a vacuum, and I respect that, but I don't envy staying far away from them.

It is immoral. What the corporations are doing is immoral. Being immoral back doesn't make you any better than they are, you become just as guilty through different means. This isn't justice, it's just a stupid back and forth process with zero winners. People need to stop acting like they are knights in shining armor being this way.

Casual reminder that this project would've received a playable build if it was kept a secret until ready.
That's exactly what happened and went on for almost a month, though! Even the planned Android builds released AFAIK (did they?), so it was dumb luck. A LOT of it. I was surprised the project would release to begin with, much less that it would continue to be developed and released as long as it did.

The real tragedy is that it was closed source, and it looks like not all goals were met, so that's probably the state it will remain in indefinitely.

Last edited by lightwo,
there an Android port in the making as well, but the creator is being really cagey with builds apart from showing some footage every now and then, not sure if it's the same guy, but he might suffer the same fate sooner or later given the circumstances..

I feel like this could have a different ending had the dev used a cleanly reverse-engineered source code instead of the leaked source code.
With a game as large as GTAV, that's a pretty long shot. Other mistakes were made too, and Rockstar would probably go after cleanroom ports too given their "modding policy", but the real impact of this approach was that nobody can continue where they left off.
