In honor of the PlayStation's 30th anniversary, Sony has launched a webpage revealing some interesting facts in its history — including the long-speculated lifetime sales of the PlayStation 2.

The website confirms that the PlayStation 2 has sold over 160 million consoles worldwide since it launched in 2000, making it the highest-selling console of all time. It's followed by two Nintendo consoles: the Nintendo DS at 154.02 million units sold, and the Nintendo Switch at 146 million consoles sold.

The PS2 is one of the best consoles ever made.

I hold the NES and SNES in high regard, but the PS2 had one of the best libraries of all time. The PS2 was the last gen where companies could experiment while making a full fledged game, and just about everything made its way stateside.

The PS2 earned those sales, let me tell you.

This has nothing to do with the news that the Switch surpassed the PS4 (sending Sony back to second place lol).
It is a total coincidence that Sony pulled this number out of their ass (with no facts to back it up) right after the Switch outsold the PS4. Totally unrelated events.

That's an interesting counterpoint. I think there was another number, maybe 150 million, but now every search engine is flooded with articles on the new 160 million value. Even if it is just marketing, the PS2 found great success in the 2000's. I'll always consider it one of (if not the) best console of all time.
