I'm not a techie guy, but i5? I have 2 Dells [laptop n PC] with i5 and they have trouble just running the basics. 
if the laptop is upgradeable that means it's at least 10 years old, which would explain why it struggles to "run the basics"

yeah that laptop is ancient, no wonder it struggles to run things, the desktop still has some life to give though, that generation of i5s is still a fairly hard fighter
The desktop is decent, that laptop is more ancient than you. Got a decent amount of RAM though. It's probably DDR3 but it's worth saving when you throw away the rest.
Personally i recommend looking up what CPU you mb supports. You can also try a cheap SSD and a low profile gpu to speed it all up
That is a beast of a PC for $420. One of those 'too good to be true' sort of deals so you might want to verify it's real first.
OP's i5 wouldn't be a problem. Your issue is that you have i5s which are over 10 years old (2011 and 2014). The i5-12600KF is from 2021 and, for example, most pretty intensive games will run really well on it still.
