Basically one of my dad's coworkers wanted to "hack" his 3DS, but he just wants a cartdrige like a SKY3ds because he has a Majora's Mask 3DS and he's scared of bricking it while I mod it.

Soooooo I know nothing about those cartdriges, mainly because:
1) My 3DS is modded
2) I have the old SKY3ds model but my dad bought it for me when I was 5 years old. I know how to use the software but its template was last updated in 2017, and lots of games have released since then.
So what do you guys reccomend me? Buying him a cartdrige or convince him to mod his 3DS?
Also, if I'm going to buy a cartdrige idk where to start from.

Thanks in advance! :D

Expensinve Sky3DS+ should work within it's own limitations.
That said I can understand somebody not wanting to mod a specific device: I avoid all kind of modding or flashcarts on the SNES edition New 3DS XL. Things like flashcarts need way more power than legit games. It hasn't caused any issues for me, but I still wouldn't use them on consoles in pristine condition.

Overall the risk of screwing up 3ds.hacks.guide is next to zero and CFW will allow repairing software damage, which can happen on stock systems as well.

That is the way to go if keeping a valuable thing stock:
He could buy another 3ds...

sky3ds+ has no brick risk lol
I have to disagree on this: Using way more power than specified puts strain on the hardware components. Some anecdotal "I have been using flashcarts for n years on m consoles and nothing bad happened!" isn't going to change that.
Flashcarts can damage the firmware of DS consoles in edge cases. Then there is mechanical precision. Rather lack of precision. Inserting my R4i Gold 3DS into the SNES edition New 3DS XL just once (ntrboot into GodMode9 to dump paid games + backup NAND) felt awful as it required some force.

These things are pretty safe. But… damage can't be ruled out.

That's a fair assessment, although I'd say that there's far less chance of bricking a stock 3ds using a sky3ds cart than there is of bricking a CFW 3ds with or without a flashcart.
In either case, if a brick occurred the chances of it being unrecoverable are less with a flashcart on a stock system.

In which case you might as well just say that normal usage of the console has a brick risk, because you're using it and things will wear down

I know, but he doesnt want a modded firmware. thats the problem, I have to convince him to do so.
There are far fewer risks with CFWs compared to flashcards.
Running a CFW opens the system to homebrews, emulators, customization options, and countless other options he won't get with a cart. Coupled with the fact that Luma3DS has 100% game compatibility compared to the roughly 98% with Sky3DS/+

Can't really agree with that, cfw allows you to run whatever software which can modify system files and cause issues, but sky3ds will only run signed official software and nothing else so there's no possible additional "risk" compared to an unmodded one

Of course it wont do it just by itself, you have to actually get bad software and run it, but modded has a lot more access and possibility to screw stuff up while sky3ds is noob proof and you cant screw up your 3ds even if you try

I'm sorry but flashcarts are outdated and risks with homebrew are hidden behind layers that one would have to deliberately fuck up. Luma3DS effectively has no risks for the average user. Is there a brick risk with Sky3DS? Unlikely. But is there an additional strain on the battery? Most likely.

There are risks with carts that don't exist with CFW.

Plus, carts struggle with Pokemon games and several other games. Seriously, there really isn't a reason to keep using carts when CFW is just obviously better. The additional features alone make it better and adding perfect compatibility really begs the question of why anyone would keep using outdated tech like carts.

"Outdated" doesn't mean risky, claiming that sky3ds would have higher risks of screwing up the system than literally modifying the system software is disigenuous at best

Flashcards (ones that just work - like sky3ds) definitely have their place.
If that's what the guy really wants, fine.
The benefit of a sky3ds card, you can lend it to a friend!
Or if your 3ds breaks you can simply put it in a new system (probably keeping all of your saves too! - I forget)

Just because cfw is much better overall, it doesn't mean everyone is comfortable with it.
Some people still prefer real physical books instead of ebooks :)

gateway and sky3ds are horrendously outdated and will just brick the current firmware
there is literally no other option

I agree that they're outdated, but that's it lol

We moved from "what hack to choose from" to "what gun to choose from"

I dumped all my pkm games and play them same as original one using sky3ds+.
What struggle do you mean?
Btw 3ds and cfw for it outdated too, there already next gen console exist.
How cartridge can be outdated if it's worked at time it was released?
Then all things with 3ds outdated too.
And you not touch any homebrew with sky3ds, not mod console.
It's safer and if he don't want to mod it's best choice for him.
But he would not have access for dlc\other region games\translations and other neat stuff with unmoded 3ds, so it's worth to mod it.
Best choice to have both - Luma3ds+Sky3ds+
