and I quote from wiibrew

A USB Mass storage device file/folder lister demo has been released on the #wiidev channel by svpe, the same person who made the first SD elfloader. It is still in testing stages and the code needs to be cleaned up, so no download link will be provided here. It is compatible with anything that adheres to the USB Mass Storage Device specification and FAT16, including USB memory sticks, flash drives, certain phones/MP3 Players, some FAT-formatted USB Hard Drives and even single-slot card readers. When a cleaned-up version is released it will be posted here. Very early and probably buggy source code is available now.

You should probably submit the actual source to digg, not this post

So, FAT means no files or space larger than 4GB. 2GB or smaller thumb drives/MP3 players are the only thing this will work for.

How is it not important.
I see a number of ways in how this is an important step forward.
1) USB now usable by homebrew. It's just a matter of working with the new code until we can start supporting more than just USB drives. Think about using the 360 controller for emulators on the Wii or something.

2) For pirates this may lead to a USB HDD loader for games, much like USB Extreme on the PS2, but IIRC playing games off a USB hard drive is glitchy and buggy due to USB being slower.

3) This may also lead to a way for you to directly connect your PC to your Wii, which would be great for developers.

this is amazing! u made my day! a few days maybe a week it'll be perfected

Please don't post things like that. Sorry if I sound rude, but all your post is stating is that you want it rushed along. Dev teams don't like being rushed along, and if it's something people have been clamoring for it's even more annoying, unless they're trying to release a half-assed app. The point is, testing and perfecting will probably take longer than a week, trying to say less is kinda like insulting them.

I'm not sure how viable an HD Loader would be...anyone care to comment? Since it hasn't been done on 360 or PS3, I don't know how likely that is for Wii.

I'm especially interested in directly connecting PC to Wii. I was looking at the USB Gecko, but I figured that would be useless since it was only a matter of time till some USB support was achieved on Wii.

And yes, I do realize that this is VERY preliminary, but this just means that much more is possible in the near future.

This is only because the PS2 didn't support USB 2.0 and the USB 1.1 ports became a bottleneck for everything.

The Wii's USB ports are 2.0, so speed should theoretically not be an issue.

As someone who owns a decent number of Wii games already (18) I'm interested in this since a 2.5" hdd is much more portable and robust than a bunch of dvds and their cases.

In regards to the speed, it was an issue for the PS2 as the USB ports were only v1.1. This had a theoretical maximum throughput of about 1.5MB/s, which is about the speed of a 1x DVD drive. The Wii on the other hand has v2.0 USB ports, which have a theoretical maximum of 60MB/s, or the equivalent of around a 45x DVD drive. While I don't know the speed of the Wii's optical drive, given most dvd drives for PC these days are 16x, I'm sure the USB is much faster.

Edit: peepoop beat me to it

Ah.
I wasn't sure if USB 2.0 was as fast as reading off the disc or not.
As for PS2 not having USB 2.0, this is news to me as well.

The Wii's DVD drive is 6x, so USB 2.0 is more than adequate, even if it's not utilized very well.

This in and of itself isn't very useful, but it paves the way to more innovation later.

And to the comment on the PS3 or the 360 not having HDD support... sort of a different ball game there. HDD support is what the XBox hacking community was based on. Even though that was EIDE, it's the same kind of ball of wax, and a better point of comparison.

Only USB 1.1 is supported by the hardware so you're not going to be able to load your warez copies legal backups from the HDD. It's never going to be fast enough

I wouldn't count it out yet... just wait until they can crack Scarlet... once that's done, the possibilities are almost endless!
