UK police arrest 17 year old over recent Rockstar Games hacks

Instant 5 stars, me lad

City of London police, supported by the National Crime Agency's cyber crime unit, have detained a 17 year old male from Oxfordshire, United Kingdom over what appears to be an investigation regarding the recent and monumental Rockstar Games leaks of last week as well as other hacking attempts possibly related to Uber Technologies.

Rumours circulating on Twitter suggest he was operating as part of the hacking group Lapsus$. He remains in police custody at this time.

More details are expected to be released by the police or possibly FBI later today.

Guess if he was in them USA, Crapstar's or Take2Shits would've just directly sent assassins to take him out?
Iirc, they did send like some mobs to "warn" a guy making mods for GTA to, well, stop doing so?
Really classy corpo move.

Dude, just put them on your ignore list and be done with it, it's not super necessary to announce it. I never did, and I'm blissfully happy.

"corporate bootlicker" lmao meanwhile I never paid for any GTA game and don't intend to but alright, guess you are the actual clown here putting me on your ignore list over something so minor (which isn't even true in the end), cringe.

Yeah, but I hate people pro-corpos the likes like that guy, mh.
Still, don't always do it, just when they particularly tick me, off, I guess.

Even governments can't secure their shit. Getting hacked is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when. Although it's totally possible he exploited some massive security failure on their part, it's also possible that he's a talented hacker that found a clever exploit. Unfortunately, offense has a massive advantage over defense in cybersecurity and there are no signs of that changing any time soon.
It's also possible he got one of the devs with a Nigerian prince scam. Or went on Discord and said, "hello fellow developers, I seem to have lost my password."

The Texas school shooter doesn't deserve anything more than a slap on the wrist. The majority of the blame falls on the kids for not wearing their Stark Industries armor suits to class.
And I thought LinuxAres' analogy was bad, Christ this is in poor taste. Who was killed over the GTA6 leak, exactly?

Most braindead comment I could expect is the first already, spares me browsing through the rest of the garbage some people gotta state besides knowing they are just entitled kiddos who think "big company bad". How convenient!
It has nothing to do with Rockstar's "goodness," everything to do with the fact that they got more or less pranked by a 17-year-old. It's a victimless crime unless he actually took something of value from them, and it's easy to argue that he did not. What's the alternative? Throw the book at the kid, put him in debt or jail for life? That would indeed make Rockstar the unequivocal bad guy in this scenario.

It wasn't about extremity. It was about how you determine the blame. If the victim could have defended themselves, does that make the person who committed the "attack" less culpable? Maybe. That was what KitChan was entertaining. Don't pretend to be repulsed. You know you go out of your way to be edgy more often than not.

A good analogy requires an accurate assessment of the power balance in the original scenario, as well as an accurate assessment of the crime being committed. As the "victim" is a multibillion dollar conglomerate whose supposed expertise lies in the digital realm, yes, obviously they should've been able to defend themselves against a 17-year-old with a laptop. More importantly, the victim has to prove that something of value was taken from them, and Rockstar cannot reasonably claim that this leak will result in lost sales. If their army of lawyers can convince a judge that it will, that's more an indictment of a flawed justice system than anything else.

No, it doesn't. "Power balance" has nothing to do it.

as well as an accurate assessment of the crime being committed.

You literally said that Rockstar could have defended themselves, making them more responsible. Someone taking that sentiment and providing a hyperbolic expression of it is a completely expected outcome. You should have seen that coming, so it's your fault.

Stop with the contrarian bullshit, I'm beyond sick of it. Of course the power balance is relevant, we're talking about an individual teenager versus a conglomerate comprised of thousands of people, lawyers and cybersecurity experts included. You can't then boil down a good analogy of that scenario to one individual versus another.

If someone wants to use absurd hyperbole in a response to a comment where I used none, they're free to do so. Just as I'm free to then point out the absurdity of it.

The analogy was purely based on what you said, not based on what you think people should believe about the scenario.

Are you not aware of the function of a hyperbole? You are being redundant.

Oh okay, I guess I just "thought" Rockstar was a multibillion dollar corporation. When in fact they're an indie developer, and GTA V sold exactly five copies, thus the title. My bad.

Context matters. This shouldn't be something I have to explain even to a graduate of elementary school, let alone anybody with more education than that.

Again. Literally nothing to do with "The majority of the blame falls on Rockstar for failing to secure their shit."

If you believe the fault lies with Rockstar because they are a multibillion corporation, you should have said that instead of moaning about people not reading your mind.

Everybody fucking knows Rockstar is a multibillion dollar corporation, JFC. If your advice is that I speak down to everybody as though they have the intelligence of a sea sponge, it's bad advice. You're the only person I have to speak to that way.
