Hi everyone.😁

A few days ago I received a battery for DS Lite purchased on eBay, which should have been original, as explicitly specified.
$_57.jpeg

Trying to insert it in the battery slot I realized that it did not fit, it was actually bigger than almost a millimeter.
I had to remove the plastic sticker that covered it, and that already showed that it was not original: in the picture you can see the result.
IMG_20210925_093608.jpg

Even so I had to force it in a bit, and it barely fit.
Turning on the console I feared that, if the voltage was too high, it would blow out some resistor. Fortunately, that didn't happen.

But as I feared, and suspected, this battery lasts considerably less than the previous original one.
Using an r4 it lasted less than 2 hours before the red light came on.
After charging, using only the gba SuperCard (slot2) it lasted a little over an hour.

Bottom line, I put the previous battery back in. Am I to conclude that all the batteries for DS Lite on eBay are fake, cheap and worse than the originals? At least it didn't damage my console, as those other 2000 mAh batteries that also sell on eBay and cost even less seem to do.
Is there any battery that is reliable and trustworthy? And where to find them?🤔

Hello and a good morning.

To my knowledge it is not possible to (mass-)produce¹ Li-ion batteries the size of a DS Lite battery (UGS-003) with 2000mAh – still some of these have these ridiculous ratings. That looks nothing like a genuine Nintendo battery. Just because it says "original" on the sticker, this doesn't mean anything. Same for the mAh rating on cheap batteries.

I've good experiences with cheap Cellonic batteries for 2|3DS(XL) replacing CTR-003 and SPR-003. In use for some years now with nearly identical capacity compared to the original. Those brand does't seem to exist for DS Lite.

While a battery shouldn't damage the DS, I agree with the statement: fake, cheap, worse. This is a problem. Even if we would say: Everybody please order some battery on eBay or Amazon and post the results, this wouldn't help much. If some people did this, it is likely that one would (truthfully) post: "I had good results with this one [Link]" and a month later the seller has – without even knowing – a different batch with the same sticker that performs like… blunt word: shit. :shit:

My only advise is not to order those with exaggerated capacity printed on. If it is too good to be true, then it is not true. When the old, genuine batteries are done for, this leaves only trial and error.

Good luck!

This thread should mention those as well (I guess you are indirectly referring to them with your post):

Thank you for repliying to my post. But even you have come to my conclusion: quality and reliable batteries cannot be found for DS Lite.

That's what I did. If you see in the picture the battery is 900 mAh. The 2000 mAh ones I already knew were bad.
While a battery shouldn't damage the DS,
In the first link you posted, that thread says just the opposite.
The thread in the second link you posted is also mine; and there I was talking about the 2000 mAh batteries.

I have read the thread with the damaged DS. It just sounds strange. A li-ion cell, even if different chemistry with slightly higher nominal voltage shouldn't cause this.

DS are much more complex than older devices, and certainly not as forgiving. I'll try to apply higher voltages x (4.3V < x < 5.0V) to the battery terminals of a DSi and see what happens. I guess it will survive. As always: My tests will take a while and I can't promise meaningful results.

Instead of the needed 6.0V, I accidentally set my universal power supply to 9.0V when connecting it to a DMG-001. After a few minutes I heard a quiet whistling sound that gradually began to get louder. It took me another few minutes to realize the mistake and I turned down the voltage to 6V.

The Game Boy is still fine. That was some serious overvoltage.

Thank you for repliying to my post. But even you have come to my conclusion: quality and reliable batteries cannot be found for DS Lite.
I wouldn't go as far that there are none. Just… don't know a reliable source.

I use this battery, and just solder it inside. Very reliable battery.

It also fits nicely inside a GBA SP and Gameboy Color. Might even fit a Pocket, with some shell trimming of the battery holder.

Thanks for the suggestion.😃
I'm not very familiar with a soldering iron, sadly. And then, who knows how long it would last using a gba flashcart (slot2), as known remarkably demanding.
I should also see if it is available for the european market....🤔

Yeah, a 703048 lipo battery should be available to you on amazon.co.uk, or whatever you use. And if you can't solder, I'm sure someone could mod it for you. If you were in the USA, I'd do it for you for free, as long as you paid the shipping.

Thanks, but you don't need to go that far! If you take that risk is because you really trust your own judgment, perhaps excessively...🤣

Hihihihi! Hahahaha! (mad scientist laughter).

Serious answer:
You got this a little wrong. I don't trust my judgement and have no idea what is going to happen. This one DSi motherboard is already completely unusable (probably NAND defect) but it turns on. Guess why I plan to test on a DSi, when your topic as well as the thread with the not charging device both are about DS Lite: No scrap DS Lite motherboard at hand...

Pretty good idea using a standard cell! I might consider this when needed.
But not everybody has soldering equipment and not everybody dares to try soldering. Having work done by a professional is expensive (It is not even easy to find somebody willing to do it. I had no luck asking for help on a console e.g. in phone repair shops. "Not a phone!")

Many average people will prefer a plug&play replacement. I would say there is a need for a good and reliable third-party battery.

@Jayro Actually, my original battery for DS lite, the one I wanted to replace, has about the same life as yours.
I foolishly thought that with a good new battery you could get more than double the life...🤣
Now I think that's impossible.😁
What brightness level? That makes a huge difference on DS Lite, more than on 3DS where CPU/GPU take more power.

The flashcarts drawing so much power is a thing that makes me worry a bit. Normal cartridges don't draw a noticeable amount of power and I have no idea if the DS are designed to deliver so much power for prolonged time through SLOT-1 and SLOT-2. I've never heard a DS fail because of flashcarts though.

I have been using both r4 and GBA flashcart on my DS Lite for over 5 years now and have never had the slightest problem.
I even use my GBA flashcart while simultaneously using my r4, with which I launch the previous one, to use a custom GBA frame/border of my choice! 😉
