Nintendo acquires Next Level Games

nlg.png

Nintendo has just announced the acquisition of Canadian video game developer Next Level Games. The latter is no stranger to Nintendo games having developed titles like Luigi’s Mansion 3, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, the Punch-Out!! remake and the Super Mario Strikers series. The acquisition is expected to close this March 1st.

Are there any games you'd like to see emerging from this acquisition?

We ae heading to a Decade of exclusives. Microsoft is buying game companies, Sony is buying game companies, Nintendo is buying game companies...

Does Nintendo really need to do this? The Switch already has more games that the DS, the DSi and the 3DS combined.

Then again the number of good games is an issue. Will they do quality control?

Will we get a sequel to the Gamecube Luigi's Mansion that doesn't suck? Will we get a Switch version of the Wii Punch Out?

I happen to think that Dark Moon was decent, and LM3 was excellent - the only "sucking" happening is via the PolterGust.

The Switch might or might not have "more games than the DS, DSi and 3DS combined", but as you mentioned, those actual handhelds have far more excellent games than this thing does. Pokemon games that don't entirely shit on the franchise's quality, including Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, and Pokemon Ranger; Bravely Default and Second; Ace Attorney series (all main series titles are on the 3DS, and no other platform whatsoever); Professor Layton; a ton of Legend of Zelda games (though only a handful are actually worth playing); Chrono Trigger; Fire Emblem; Super Mario 64 DS and 3D Land; Star Fox 64 DS; and likely a lot more I can't currently think of.

Oh, and those actual handhelds (except the DSi) also had backwards-compatibility, making them even more convenient.

Honestly, the Switch still sucks - only a tiny selection of worthwhile games. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Luigi's Mansion 3, arguably Super Mario Odyssey, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for multiplayer (definitely not for singleplayer; go back to Brawl for that).

Not a fan of aquisitions. It seemed like Next Level Games were doing pretty fine on their own before.
Also i want a new Mario Strikers Game.

Now, if only they did the same with AlphaDream…
they already went bankrupt, not sure what is left to acquire, nintendo owns the ips so they would only aquire what the developers? i mean they went out of job so nintendo can just hire them to work on their studios without having to pay huge amounts of money to cover losses on the studio lol.

and they get the devs and they already owned the ips so nothing is lost lol.

This is some next-level transaction ...
But seriously, if Nintendo is reading this, you know what would be the next-level acquisition after Next Level:

Level-5.

A Gaming Company that can make fully-autosterescopic, detailed and optimised Yo-kai Watch worlds on the 3DS platform, when Game Freak couldn't with all their Pokémon titles there, will definitely have a lot to teach about optimisation on any Console.

Not a great example when Yo-kai Watch 4 runs like crap.

luigi mansion 3 was great, yeah dark moon was preety sucky with the whole level thing, but luigi mansion 3 was preety damn good imo.

nintendo just wants to get companys to do more sucefull games like luigi mansion 3 and so on, not all their games were huge games but noone of them were awful so they are a stricly positive developers

their switch games so far have sucked, not sure what they are doing but they arent doing great games, also cancelled all games from getting region ports, not sure if due to economical reasons or not, but they are now stricly japanese only developers, so the chance of their games getting localized is very slim since they cancelled their european and usa branches like mid last year.

They probably banked on the Switch flopping.

... Few acquisitions happen at the peak of a Company's roll, so do you really understand the point I'm making.
A good buy is at its lowest point to gain maximum profit.

If the talent is still the same, then the knowledge-base on optimisation is still intact.
All the more reason for Nintendo to slip in an offer now, when their bargaining power is stronger.

Wait what? You said they have a lot to teach Game Freak about optimization when they're unable to optimize their own games, a la Yo-Kai Watch 4.

My examples are from the 3DS, as that shows the pedigree they're capable of, especially on the much more limiting hardware specifications of the time.

That is for a reason.
The Switch is when they didn't do as well.

This would be exactly the portfolio a corporate buyer would look for in a Gaming Company, with a history of great work and franchise IPs but also a slump so as to lower valuation and raise bargaining power.

If you're still baffled by this, then there's nothing I can really explain to you about what constitutes a good buy.
Still, if it's your money and you want to buy the best company when they're at their peak, who am I to tell you no.

Huh, I thought they already bought them out back when they announced they were going to be a Nintendo exclusive company 4 or 5 years ago or whatever. I suppose it probably won't change much in the grand scheme of things really, so that's nice I guess?

I would really rather they didn't. The last thing I want is more artificial Nintendo exclusivity from a company that already has a good range of non-Nintendo-exclusive titles.

I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol

I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
